A DISTANCE Stars From ‘Morocco’ Play in New Romance “Desire,” the Paramount romantic comedy which has its local opening today at the Paramount theatre, brings together that ideal team of screen lovers, Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper. It is their first co-star- ring picture since “Morocco.” The promise of exceptional screen entertainment filled the house with Dietrich fans, Cooper fans, and those who like to see them together. “Desire” reveals a new Marlene Dietrich, glam- orous in a different way from her past creations, and a Gary Cooper who turned in as fine a performance as he has ever given. ‘Those who see these stars in “De- gire® must agree with Director Frank ‘Borzage, who places them at the head of a list of famous screen lovers of all time. Miss Dietrich, as @ breath-taking Continental beauty, is used by a gang of master crooks to purloin a costly string of pearls, and accomplishes the dob with finesse. She asks a leading Parisian jeweler to deliver the pearls to her so-called husband, a famous Psychiatrist. She then calls on the Psychiatrist to ask him to examine the jeweler, whom she represents as her mentally deranged spouse. In the ensuing comedy of errors, she makes off with the jewels. In her flight, the siren meets an American, played by Gary Cooper. Perfect foils, they skirmish in a live- ly give and take of comedy which moves into romance by easy stages. ‘Three-fourths of the residencés in the United Etates are constructed of Mount Logan, with an altitude of 19,850 feet, is the highest mountain Canada. The outstanding event is a steeple- chase race for cowboys, with wrangl- ers from all the surrounding ranches taking part, in an atmosphere of sus- Picion and hatred prevailing because of the last-minute entry of Jones, known to all as the son of a cattle thief killed by the sheriff 15 years be- fore, Buck and his famous white horse “Silver” are regarded as likely winners, and even a quickly formed plot does not prevent their coming in first after a wild ride by the com- pany of shouting cowboys. However, Jones is disqualified on a trumped- up charge and the $500 prize is given to the man who finished second. Buck is outraged by the injustice, but at the moment he does not realize that this is the beginning of a cam- paign of persecution which eventual- ly places him in jail, charged with cattle stealing. How he finally turns the tables on his enemies makes of “The Throwback” a tense drama of unusual interest, A single peony may produce 3,000,- 000 grains of pollen.
