THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 1936 Rhineland Centuries Old European ‘Front’ Sues Neato Doctor Bloody Wars in Picturesque Valley Have Remade Contin- ent Since Julius Caesar New York, March 13.— (4) — Song and legend celebrate the Rhineland’s picturesque castles and pretty fairy tales, but history also knows its wine- flowing valleys as the centuries-old battleground where armies remake the map of Europe. Today the marching feet of Hitler's warriors echo against the Rhenish hills a sound familiar since the puni- tive expedition -of Julius Caesar. While Europe faces perhaps its grav- est crisis since the war, Germans once more sing, “Steadfast and true each son, each son of thine, stands sentry o’er the Rhine, our noble Rhine.” Romans First Watchword? Roman legions kept the first “watch on the Rhine.” . ” For nearly 1,000 years the river, as the boundary of the Roman empire, protected the civilized world from Germanic savages. But even before that, fighting over the Rhineland was an old pastime with Europe’s wander- ing hordes. Teutons from the north were bat- tling the resident Celtic tribes for possession of the district when his- tory began. The blonde invaders won, and only a few tombs and place names were left to mark the Celtic occupation. That was about 400 B. C. Ditches patterned across the rolling fields, to trap the dust and keep it tied at the first stir of a strong wind, constitute one of their chief defenses against a recurrence of last year’s at- tacks on the topsoil. In this area the long job of “dust proofing” the land has been started by the CCC, which is digging contour furrows in parallel lines along sloping ground, The furrows. abutted by dikes plowed up a foot high, have the dou- ble purpose of stopping blown soil and holding what rain there is, keep- ing it m washing away the fertile topping. The area affected last year included the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, southwestern Kansas, southeastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico. School Library Gets Valuable Additions A complete file of The National Geographic for the last 15 years and a@ set of Harvard Classics are among the recent donations to the Bismarck high school library in the drive for river forts garrisoned by the Romans. 7 a It was there, in the first century B. Y., March 13.—(#)—The appeal of Rose Freistater New York City school teacher, who was refused @ teacher’s license by the city board of education because she was over- weight was denied Friday by State Commissioner of Education Frank P. Graves. Commissioner Graves based his ruling on the fact that Miss Freistater delayed her appeal from the ruling of the city board of education past the legal limit. Miss Freistater was first denied a license by the New York City board of education because, it contended, she weighed 182 pounds. The board gave her six months to reduce to 150 pounds. She lost 20 pounds and asked for an extension of time but the board refused. Water Users Seeking Dry Year Protection Salt Lake City, March 13.—(P)—A flexible program of repayments en- abling water users to meet project ob- ligations in depression years was urged Thursday at the annual insti- tute of irrigation agriculture, #ttend- | ed by representatives from 11 states. including North and South Dakota. A resolution proposed by a special committee, asks the national farm bu- | reau federation to sponsor lemsletion | revising the present repayment con- tracts so the farmer can “pay fon | teturns of the land.” | GROUNDHOG SAVES RABBITS Columbus, O.—The groundhog was | credited today with saving the lives of innumerable rabbits during the sub-zero period that took a heavy toll of Ohio game this winter. Law- rence Wooddell, Ohio conservation commissioner, said rabbits found a snug haven in groundhog burrows while thousands of birds and other wild life perished in open fields .
