4 STRIKES BY LABOR TAKE MANY FORMS THROUGHOUT NATION *Sit Down’ in Ohio Plants Is Only One of Number of Unconventional Types Akron, Ohio, March 5.—Two “sit- @own” strikes in this area, one at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber company works in Akron and the other at the Columbia Chemical company plant in Barberton, have attracted consider- able attention because such tactics ere seldom used by disaffected work- ers in the United States. Usually employes with a less novel method of showing their Gispleasure by forsaking their work ae seeking to have others act sim- larly. At the Goodyear works, however, | the discharge of a small group of men led other employes to remain, not working, at their posts. The company greed to take the men back but the employes continued their “sit down.” ‘The management was reluctant to use — Be a good Samaritan. In- vite them to dinner at the Prince. + PROTECTION ‘ievance prefer the | force in ousting the idle men, and the latter knew that so long as they re- mained in the proximitly of their ma- chines their jobs would be safe. The chemical workers’ strike was for a 4-cents-an-hour wage increase in the plant as “sit-down” protest- ants and were permitted to have food sent to them. Variations in Strikes Labor has many unconventional forms of protest, brought into play from time to time as occasion, in the quire. While the “sit-down” strike is essentially a passive form of protest, there are other and more active | methods of striking which vary from |“direct action” of a harmless but an- noying nature to sabotage. A few weeks ago sailors on the | Pacific Coast resorted to “job action” |and caused a tie-up of sixty-four steam schooners carrying lumber in the coastwise trade. Their method was simple. They quit work at hours stated in one clause of their contract with shipping employers, ignoring the fact that provision for overtime was made in another section. They did | this in protest against refusal of the companies to change certain features in the agreement. Such a strike sometimes referred to as a ‘regulations” strike, a term used in Australia when men abide by every detail of long and complicated in- structions, particularly on the rail- ways, The result is that trains are delayed and production of factories is curtailed. ‘Direct Action’ in France “Direct action” was held in high = COMFORT > Protect You" A New and Unusual SILK HOSE For the Women of Bismarck Full Fashioned of pure silk Special Introductory Price in the newest Spring shades, PEOPLE’ DEP’T STORE WEEK - END SPECIALS SES ee SILK HOSE Fall fashioned Silk Hose im all the Newent Shades. The strikers remained ; opinion of leaders, may seem to re-; lesteem by theorists of revolutionary |syndicalism in France between 1895 jand 1906. Against employers the | direct-actionists used the strike, boy- |cott and sabotage, while they fur- | thered their animus against the state by mass propaganda, agitation and demonstration. | By striking “on the job” the direct- ectionists put a premium on bad or |slow work, On the railway lines in |France they sometimes indulged in the “greve perlee,” according to which baggage and perishables were misdi- rected because of inadequate address- ing or wrong labels. In England, “go slow” strikes in ; Various forms are called “ca’-canny.” The American railway unions, in 1916, used the threat of a general strike to force congress to pass the Adamson eight-hour law after they had been unable to make headway in conferences with the rail manage- ments. The general strike is frowned or by conservative trade unionists be- cause of its revolutionary connota- tions, but in the last year there have been two such strikes, both short- lived, one in Terre Haute, Ind, and the other in Pekin, Ill. Tactics of the IWW In strikes conducted by the Indus- trial Workers of the World, direct ac- tion, passive resistance and sabotage have, at different times, played im- portant parts. When the Pacific Coast was the center of “free-speech fights” in 1909 the “footloose wob- blies” invaded towns by the hundreds, knowing they would be arrested. They filled the jails, making themselves a nuisance to the taxpayers who paid the bill, During the Lawrence (Mass.) tex- tile strike in 1912 the I. W. A novel form of strike was used in Australia several years ago. They were employes whose places could not easily be filled. GOOD SEED URGED ONN. D. GARDENERS Variety Is Important Says Ex- pert at State Agricultur- al College By VICTOR LUNDEEN NDAC Extension Horticulturist Few people fully appreciate the im- portance of securing garden seed that is adapted to growing conditions in North Dakota. With the short grow- ing season in this state, often marked with excessive heat and drouth, our garden crops must have qualities of early maturity and be able to with- stand drouth. And with these desir- able characteristics you will want garden crops that will yield satisfac- torily and be of good quality. Getting the right variety of seed is much more important than the loca- tion of the seedhouse from which the seed comes. This is especially true with such crops as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, muskmelon and others in which early maturity as well a8 quality must be considered. Development of a certain amount of sales resistance may be necessary if you are going to disregard the ap- Peal of handsome pictures in seed catalogs and advertising, but you'll find it pays well to buy the right seed. For information on the varieties of vegetable eae that will give the best success in state we suggest that you secure a copy of Bulletin 187, en- titled “Vegetable Varieties for North Dakota,” which can be had free from the agricultural college publications department. You'll find it to be a helpful guide in avoiding garden dis- appointments. A point that some gardeners may overlook is the desirability of having an abundant supply of vegetables in the garden over as long a period of time as possible. Many of our varie- ties that mature early in the season, are used up long before the season is over. Keeping this in mind, you will want to choose a variety that will produce over a longer season, or you may wish to grow a couple or more of varieties that will mature at differ- ent dates. If the varieties you have been using are satisfactory, then don’t change. But if your neighbor has been hav- ing better success in gardening than you, maybe it will pay to check up on _your varieties.
