», a y OUTLOOK FOR GOOD DURUM PRICE POOR Federal Survey Shows Policies of Other Nations Reduce Export Outlet Prospects for strong Durum wheat prices are poor, according to analysis of the world situation by the federal department of agriculture. from the United States are at the lowest ebb in years, due to in- creased production in Italy and North Africa. “Strong nationalistic” policies also have operated to reduce exports. Despite this fact the supply on hand in America still is under the average although more than double the nor- mally short stocks of last season. Premiums for high-grade Durum also have been substantially reduced, the shows: ‘The effect of nationalistic policies is shown by current prices for Durum wheat in protected countries. Native Durum in Naples, Italy, was quoted at $3.00% in mid-February while Amer- ican Durum was laid on the docks at Naples for $1.10%. African Durum, favored by a French subsidy was quoted at $1.50% at Marseilles while American Durum, duty unpaid, was at $1.055%. Domestic prices for Durum have been somewhat under those for @ year ago, the mid-February aver- age at Minneapolis being $1.23 a bushel as compared with $1.34 for the corresponding week in 1935. The planting prospect is uncertain. since Durum is sown in the spring, but the Canadian government is ad- vising farmers not to plant this graiu extensively because of the restricted market outlet. Reports from Italy are that the crop there may be shorter in 1936 than in previous years because of scarcity of seed and a shortage of manpower for field work. ‘Throughout Europe the use of bet- ter seed and more fertilizer is general. Portugal, with an over supply, has en- acted a law forbidding the seeding of wheat on ground used for this crop a year ago. Democrats Will Set Convention March 11 Fargo,,N. (Associated Press Photo) Snow Has Little Business Effect for December, although it was well Northwest Volume in January! above the average for January, 1935. Remains Above Year Ago Despite Weather Business in the Northwest during January was snowbound but still ac- tive, according to the monthly review of the Ninth Federal Reserve Bank, issued Friday. Bank debits in 94 cities of the dis- trict remained at 74, the same figure as for December which was one of the best business months in recent his- tory. This was 16 points higher than the figure for January, 1934, and nine points higher than for January, 1935.|4 The first half of February, the re- port said, showed bank debits some-|# what larger than for the same period year ago, despite the handicap to business imposed by the weather. Most of these debits, however, rep- resented the completion of business transactions previously launched since retail trade decreased somewhat | in January and early February be- cause of blizzards and snow-blocked Toads. Valley Trade Dwindles In the Red River valley of North Dakota retail trade last January was 99 per cent of January, 1934. In southeastern North Dakota it was 88 per cent and in the rest of the state it was 74 per cent. Sales of beef cattle declined on the South St. Paul market with a strong demand for stockers and lower grade killer cattle. The first cattle fed with grain from the 1935 crop appeared on the market and lacked finish as com-j pared with previous years, indicating @ possible lack of fattening quality in| the 1935 grain crop. Hogs continued to move to market. as a result of the price jump follow- ing the AAA decision, but many of them lacked quality and prices de- clined and the January price average was less than 5 per cent above that ZERR’S PHONE 928 Sugar, 10 lb. cloth bag . 17c| Lettuce, firm, crisp, 2 for ..... 2 Ib, box - 17¢c Oranges, small, sweet size, 2 doz. ... All cold storage stocks were below the five year average with the exception of beet, meats and cheese. miscellaneous Throughout the district as a whole the number of dairy cows decreased per cent as compared with a de- crease of 2 per cent for the nation as whole. The dairy industry in the two Dakotas ran counter to the dis- trict and national trend with slight increases in numbers reported. The number of “other cattle” on farms in the district was 8 per cent larger than a year ago but smaller than in any other recent year except 1935. The number of hogs increased about 25 per cent between Jan. 1, 1935, and Jan. 1, 1936, but still is far below estmates for any other recent year and is less than half as large as the number on hand in 1931. Farm Income Increases Income from seven leading farm items during January was 44 per cent larger than in January, 1935, all clas- sifications showing gains, Complete figures for December for the four states show a farmers cash income of $44,327,000 before adding rental and benefit payments.
