Featuring Warner Baxter, Alice Faye, Jack Oakie and Arline Judge, at the head of an all-star cast, the picture tells an absorbing love story of the people who make the nation’s entertainment. It follows Baxter’s rise from the “flesh” shows of 14th Street to the glittering palaces of Broadway. It traces his decline under the spiteful control of his society wife, played by Mona Barrie. In the climax, the picture shows how this master of entertainment re- turns to his most spectacular success and to the realization that he had loved Alice Faye all the time. Sidney Lanfield directed the pic- ture, which features a cluster of brand new tunes from those wizard composers, Jimmy McHugh and Ted Koehler. “Spreadin’ Rhythm Around,” “Shooting High,” “Lovely Lady” and “Too Good to Be True” are the names of some of them. Specialty numbers by a stellar) vast of supporting players contribute | to the entertainment. WRIGLEY's | T# PER’ ‘Sylvia Scarlett’ Film Of Adventurous Spirit Entertainment for entertainment’s sake is brought to the screen with Katherine Hepburn as its stellar standard bearer in RKO Radio's “Syl- via Scarlett,” at the Capitol Saturday and Sunday. ‘Unique among drama in that it is Woven around no time worn theme, “Sylvia Scarlett” tells a straightfor- ward tale of stirring, romantic adven- tures. With no other aim than to amuse and entertain, it is said to be brilliantly successful in attaining its objective. Miss Hepburn essays the most dif- ficult and unique characterization of her meteoric career in this frankly different production. Throughout the major part of the photoplay, she masquerades as a boy, giving to the impersonation the full fire of dra- matic genius which has lifted her to the heights of the acting profession. In the later sequences, she assumes her true feminine identity and the contrast in characterization is said to afford still further evidence of her extraordinary talent. “Sylvia Scarlett” is the story of an adventurous spirit who is forced by circumstances into the society of those who occupy the narrow fringe between Petty rascality and outright crimin- ality, London and rural Engiand are the principal action backgrounds, Brian Aherne plays the romantic lead opposite the star and Cary Grant. is seen in a@ colorful character role Edmund Gwenn, famed English com- edy star, Princess Natalie Paley, beau- tiful scion of Russian royalty, and Dennie Moore, talented newcomer from the Broadway stage, are other members of the featured supporting cast. The picture was directed by George Cukor and is the third drama in which he has guided Miss Hepburn. The others were “A Bill of Divorce- ment” and “Little Women.” ECT GUM AIDS DIGESTION OKE, MisTER- f LET'S GET THis OVER WITH YOURE NOT GOING TO SPANK ME FOR GETTING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO RIDE OYNAMME, ARE ( WELL, PEAS-- ONE CAN OF PEAS, AND [SLECTION DAY DAWNS BRIGHT AND CLEAR ALLEY OOP TT SURE IS A SHAME THAFTA GET TH’ GRAND WIZER OUT AT THIS TIME OF NIGHT - THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1936 THE GUMPS—‘CROWNING’ A CHAMP!
