THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 1986 JAPAN DENIES ANY | INTENT OF STARTING COSTLY NAVAL RAGE Limitation Conference Begins to Disintegrate; Phillips Heads Home (Copyright, 1936, Associated Press) London, Jan. 16.—Japan disavowed frankly Thursday any intention of precipitating a costly competition in fleet construction, despite its self- elimination from international affairs. While its withdrawal from the five- power naval conference was being communicated officially to the dele- gates and the other four powers draft- ed plans to continue their efforts to achieve fleet limitations, Japan's chief delegate, Admiral Osami Nag- ano, announced: “Japan has no intention in engag- ing in a naval race, despite the absence of a imitation agreement, and I sin-' cerely hope no competition in build- ing of warships will develop between Japan and the United States. William Phillips, United States un- | dersecretary of state, also decided to) leave for home after Thursday's ses- | sion and deliver a first-hand report | of the developments to President | Roosevelt. Ethiopian Advisor CARLOAD RATE CUT ON CAST IRON PIPE Savings of $100 Per Load Will Be Effected by Order Af- ter March 20 Municipalities in North Dakota will effect a saving of more than $100 on each carload of cast iron pipe shipped into the state from Birmingham, Ala., under a new rate schedule ef- fective March 20, the North Dakota board of railroad commissioners an- nounced Thursday. The Interstate "Cecile Commis- sion has ruled that present rail rates on cast iron pipe in carloads from the Birmingham district in Alabama to all destinations in North Dakota are “unreasonable,” the state board was informed. The board intervened in the case on behalf of municipalities and users of cast iron pipe in the state. Minnesota, Montana, South Dakota and other northwest states will effect a saving through new rates as well as North Dakota. The average reduc- tion to all North Dakota points will be 4.64 per net ton, the board stated. {Cast iron pipe from Birmingham is , Widely used throughout the state. John R. D. | January 13, 1936 Editor, Tribune: I feel compelled to answer article entitled “The Court Incision” in your Peoples Forum of Jan. 13. To the author signing “A Farmer,” I would say that unless I fail to read between the lines, you are rejoicing in the fact that the supreme court ad- judged the AAA unconstitutional, thereby killing a program that may have been ill-advised as to constitu- tionality but was inaugurated and carried on in the hope and belief it would afford some measure of relief to a division of our industrial life that for years was forced to stand on its own resources and see many other divisions subsidized to their profit, either by direct government contracts or a high protective tariff. Do you not realize, Mr. Farmer, that the placing of a tariff on the impor- tation of manufactured articles was just as direct a tax on all the people for the benefit of a few as the process- ing tax under the AAA? In the case of the manufacturers tax by tariff the method was secretive so that the public would not complain, and in most cases it was proportion- ately higher, more unnecessary, and more unfair, whereas the AAA tax was MAN, PLANE SEEN AT BAY OF WHALES Message From Ellsworth Res- cue Expedition Raises Hopes for Explorer London, Jan. 16.—(#)—The Captain of the Discovery II, searching for the missing explorer, Lincoln Ellsworth, indicated in a report Thursday that an airplane had been sighted in Little America and that a man had been seen on the Bay of Whales. The committee in charge of the Discovery II’s rescue expedition an- nounced officially: “A message has been received by the Discovery committee from the Master of the Discovery II reporting that the boat arrived safely at the Bay of Whales at 10 p. m,, Jan. 15. The message indicates one man was sighted from a plane and also a ma- chine at Little America.” Part of the wireless message from the Discovery was garbled, making complete decoding impossible. Offi- cials were waiting for a repetition of the message. Railways’ Passenger, Freight Revenues Up Washington, Jan. 16—(7)—An up- turn in both passenger and freight revenues to class 1 steam railways for the first 10 months of 1935 was re- ported Thursday by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Passenger revenues mounted from 280,040,428 for 10 months of 1934 to $295,268,751 for the 1985 period, while freight revenues increased from $2,- 223,795,645 to $2,305,125,256. Son Says He Killed Butler’s Ball Is Intoxicated Father Voted a Success New York, Jan. 16—(7)—The Butler’s ball—annual celebration of the “hired help” in New York's aristocratic homes—was voted a success Thursday because many who never made a bed or cooked &@ meal attended. Three thousand guests danced at the ball Wednesday night as their masters and mistresses wait- ed on themselves at home. The committee for the dance, formally known as the United Staff's ball, said about $5,000 would be realized for charity, The butlers, cooks, and house- maids brought their friends and welcomed some of their employers. DO NOT SEEK TAXES Washington, Jan. 16—(?)—C. E. Huff, Chicago, president of the Farm- ers National Grain corporation, said Thursday his organization would in no way seek to recover processing taxes from the government. man Falin of Wildcat Valley. As in those cases, preliminary questioning of Boyd drew the assertion that the dead man was intoxicated and that the killing was in self defense, tana synod, and nationally known a led here Thursday of pneumonia, Take the whole family to “a Amateur Show Friday SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT “CAPTAIN BLOOD” opens a four- day engagement tonight at the CAPITOL THEATRE This spectacular production requires more time for presentation than an ordinary feature and the first performance will begin promptly at 6:50. Mr. Farmer, was not the increasing {of the postal rates to pay contracts for airmail and steamship lines just as direct a tax on all, that the few might benefit? Will not our supreme court be sadly put out if some farmers organiza- tion should carry a case up to them asking that they suspend all tariffs on manufactured articles inasmuch as it is causing us to pay an extra price on articles so protected? Admitting two wrongs don’t make a right, agreeing with you that we can stand on our own if given an equal chance, I still think that as long as tariff and contracts protect the other industries, that what is gravy for the goose is gravy for the gander, | Every thinking man welcomes con- structive criticism but the most of the American public are fast losing all respect for the writer who, to be impressive, resorts to the calling of ugly names. The epitaph “cancer,” as you apply it to AAA, is neither ap- propriate nor constructive. If you, Mr. Farmer, have a pro- gram to offer than can do the farmers of this nation as much good as AAA and it is constitutional and practical please spend a little time writing it. I am sure the entire nation will recognize and thank you as one of the master minds of the decade. But please do not try to tell us that an import tariff alone will do it. We had too many years of that. Yours truly, M. R. St. MARIE. 62,494 Vote Margin Is Maintained by Gomez Buy No Tire Until You See Wards New Low Prices.
