Miss Bergner récently enjoyed tre- gmendous success on both the New ‘York and London stages in the Mar- garet Kennedy play from which her current screen hit is adapted and many of the principals of the stage cast, including Hugh Sinclair, Grif- Zith Jones and Leon Quartermaine, ‘re seen in their original roles in this faithful filmization. Others prominent 4n the cast are Irene Vanbrugh, Pene- Jope Dudley-Ward, Lyn Harding and Rosalinde Fuller. Paul Czinner, Miss Bergner’s dis- tinguished director-husband, handled the megaphones on “Escape Me Never,” which affords the star her greatest role. In it she is seen as thé ‘waif, Gemma Jones, whom the way- ‘ward young composer Sebastian San- ger finds wandering about Venice with her newborn child and offers shelter. ‘The affection which develops be- tween the pair is affected by Sebas- tian’s sudden infatuation for his brother Caryl’s aristocratic sweet- heart, Fenella. Gemma leaves him and zeturns to London, whither he fol- Jows and. marries her. However, he ts too weak to discontinue his romance ‘with the irresistible Fenella. - | Winifred Shaw Is Star a rrr Of ‘Broadway Hostess’ A sparkling comedy drama, filled wih rollicking laughter, delightful romances, tinkling music, gigantic spectacles and spiced with thrills, will come to the Capitol Theatre on Wed- nesday and Thursday. This new First National film must- cal, which is enacted by an all star cast, bears the title of “Broadway Hostess,” and is a story of New York night life in its liveliest aspects. The picture introduces a new and beautiful singing star to the screen in the person of Winifred Shaw in the title role. Miss Shaw has ap- peared n several pictures notably “In Caliente,” “Sweet Adeline,” “Gold Diggers of 1935” and “Gypsy Sweet- heart.” Sharing singing honors with Miss Shaw is Phil Regan, the “sing- ing cop.” While the picture contains all the elements of a spectaclg as well as those of a musical, it is also a drama and there is tragedy and pathos, as well as laughter, music and romance in the well balanced plot: There are two mammoth spec- tacles with hundreds of beautiful girls, which were created by the famous musical comedy and dance director, Bobby Connolly.’ Others in the cast include Gene- vieve Tobin, Spring Byington, Marie Wilson, Joseph King, Donald Ross, Frank Dawson and Allen Jenkins.
