Friend of Williston Pupils Is Former Track Champion ! ‘Choppy’ Rickard, Custodian of Schools 30 Years, Starred in England Williston, N. D., Nov, 21.—()—For nearly 30 years Edwin “Choppy” Rick- ard has been custodian of Williston schools where he has looked after comforts of thousands of children from the time buildings were lighted ‘with kerosene lamps, little girls wore Pigtails and boys came to class togged in knee “britches.” “Choppy,” a nickname given him by his school “kids” because of a British accent, is back at his old stand on the Coyote gridiron this fall with his faithful companion and best friend, “Duke,” a big English bull dog. The Williston sportsman hag missed only one football game in 30 years. He suf- fered a broken shoulder in an automo- bile accident a few years ago when he ‘was en route to Minot for the annual Coyote-Magician clash. He is an athlete in his own right. He holds probably more ribbons on the cinder track than any other North Dakota runner. “Choppy” was born in England and for six years he was @ professional dis- tance runner. He recalled Thursday that he has won 137 first place rib- bons, 17 seconds and 13 thirds, All his races with exception of one were from one to 10 miles. His best time on the mile was 4 minutes and 28 sec- onds. His best 10-mile jaunt was 52 minutes and 8 seconds. In 1893 Rickard ran against W. G. George of London at Cardiff, Wales, to take second money from a field of 36 distance men. George was first and a British champion, “Choppy” retired from the track when he was 26 and came to the United States. He has been continu- ously employed as custodian of Willis- ton schools since 1006.
