BROSA ‘Way Down East’ Has Powerful Love Story If a woman pays the price of her sin in remorse and suffering, has she won the right to love and happiness again? An ageless conflict between stern rockbound morality and the spirit of liberality and forgiveness, becomes a ‘living issue again in the dramatic con- flict of “Way Down East,” which comes Sunday, Monday and Tues- day to the Paramount theatre. Adapted from the play which ‘through years has grown to the po- sition of America’s greatest melo- drama, the picture stars Rochelle Hudson and Henry Fonda, with Slim Summerville, Edward Trevor, Mar- ‘garet Hamilton and Andy Devin in ‘the chief supporting roles. The story revolves about the char- “acter played by Miss Hudson. Ap- ‘pearing from nowhere, she applies for -work on Russell Simpson’s farm, soon «wins the love of his son, played by Henry Fonda, but for some mysterious “reason fails to reciprocate his affec- tion. ‘The reason becomes apparent with time, however, as malicious gossips -bring tales of the girl’s dubious past »to the Squire's ears. The drama races to its thrilling zelose as Simpson reveals the story of the girl’s shame, then relents in his judgment before his son’s fury, his wife’s pleas for mercy. MOVIES Holocaust Inspires Awe in Pompeii Film PHOOOEN | yee OF Re ON WS RE ENOULC cane Sa Soe COULD MARE Sv TEAM i) WEN LN Come BACK WERE An awe-inspiring holocaust is brought to the screen in “The Last Days of Pompeii” by the reproduction of the historic first century eruption of Vesuvius and destruction of Pom- Peli, the city Hollywood rebuilt and then shattered for the camera. This Picture shows at the Capitol theatre tonight, Sunday and Monday. The picture is said to be one of lavishness and splendor with its grip- Ping drama rolling majestically through the pageantry of the an- cient Roman Empire. From its be- ginning, the film unfolds a thrilling series of the barbaric wonders and vivid savagery that staggers the im- agination. The beauty of classic architecture, the savage death conflicts in a giant arena, the revels in a rich man’s marble palace are among the high- lights of the photoplay. It remains for Nature, however, in the full mag- nificence of her wrath, to contribute the crowning touch to the spectacle —the blow of a titan hand descend- ing in destruction, “The Last Days of Pompeii” is a Merian C. Cooper production with Ernest B. Schoedsack directing for RKA Radio. The cast includes Pres- ton Foster, Alan Hale, Basil Rath- bone, John Wood, Louis Calbern, Da- vid Holt, Dorothy Wilson and Wyrley Birch. Ruth Rose wrote the screen play from an original story by James Ashmore Creelman and Melville WASH TUBBS WELL, BY. aera 1 NOW WE'RE GITTIN'SOMMERS) ( HADN'T YOU BETTER AMOS BIGGER WAS KILT WI!
