THE BISMARCK TRIRUN CCC Making Possible N. D. Park System Development More Than Million Dollars Be- ing Spent Annually Build- ing Playgrounds In the following article Russell Reid, superintendent and curator ef the state historical society ex- plains the park development pro- gram in North Dakota through federal emergency conservation work. Mr. Reid is state procure- ment officer under the federal setup. By RUSSELL REID North Dakota should consider itself extremely fortunate in having its parks developed through emergency conservation work. The North Dakota historical society, entrusted with the supervision of all state parks, has been acquiring areas suitable for parks since 1907. From @ small beginning our park system has now developed into something of which North Dakota citizens can well be proud. Unfortunately no adequate system of developing parks was inaugurated ‘until the advent of the federal emer- gency conservation work program. Some development had been done pre- viously on small areas but lack of funds and technical personnel made 4t impossible to complete major im- provements. Have State Division Under the present set-up, a divi- ion of the national park service nown as the state park division is set up in Washington. The United States is divided into eight districts with a regional officer at the nead of each. The state park authorities acquire stitable property and formu- late a park program which is pre- sented to the regional offive. The regional office for North Dakota is at Omaha, Neb., with Major George Gibbs in charge. If the regional office approves the application for park work it is sent to the Wash- ington office for further considera- tion. After approval in the Washing- ton office, a CCC park camp is granted for a time sufficient to com- Piete the work applied for. North Dakota has eight CCC park camps as follows: SP 1, which is working on the In- ternational Peace Garden on the Canadian border, north of Dunseith. SP 2, which is working on Pioneer nd Riverside metropolitan parks at Bismarck. SP 3, is working on Fort Abraham Lincoln state park, located 414 miles south of Mandan. SP 4, is working on three Fargo metropolitan parks. SP 5, is working on Grand Forks state park on the Turtle river north of Arvilla, SP 6 and 7, which is working on North Roosevelt Regional State park ““ALL-BRAN FORMS MAJOR PORTION OF MY BREAKFAST” Delicious Cereal Relieved His Constipation* Read Mr. Huyghe’s voluntary letter: “After suffering for years, T happened to notice in the grocery a box of ALI-BraNn. I determined to give it a fair trial. “I cannot say enough for its ef- fect, as I am @ man 58 years of age, at the time in life when one needs just what ALL-BRAN does for you.” —Mr. Robt. A. In carrying on this work the government has spent large sums of money which has been a distinct benefit to the peo- ple of the state. Our eight park camps means an expenditure of over one million dollars each year. This amount includes not only the cost of in the Badlands southwest of Wat- ford City. SP 8, is working on South Roosevelt Regional State park in the Badlands near Medora. SP 9, will work on Jamestown State park on the Pipestem river, a short distance northwest of Jamestown. All Permanent But One All of these are permanent camps with the exception of the one located at Bismarck.
