Between dangerous thrills and dan- gerous romance, there is something doing every minute in “China Seas,” the ew all-star Metro-Goldwyn- ‘Mayer drama which opened Satur- day at the Paramount theatre. The stars are Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and Wallace Beery. It is a picture in which interest never slackens, and action never lags. It takes its place among the finest entertainment vehicles of the new screen season, Part of the story is played in the howling fury of a tropical hurricane on the last frontier, the wild south- wanderer in the Asiatic ports, play- ed by Miss Harlow. Involved with them is a mysterious trader, Wallace ‘Beery, who is ‘suspected of being the master mind of a piracy plot. Action takes place entirely on the old liner Kin Lung as it plows the China sea between Hong- and Singapore. Because it is a picture of Irish life in New York, it jumps from tears to laughter, from bitter family brawls to evidences of brotherly love, from ro- mance to drama, from thrilling ac- tion to robust humor, Mary Gordon, as the Irish mother of the three stars, is the middle aged unknown who, & year ago, was cook- ing in a Hollywood studio restaurant, and who had ocacsionally been used as an extra in the movies. The love interest centers around Olivia de Havilland, a beautiful young girl discovered by Max Reinhardt who cast her for a leading role in “A Mid- summer Night’s Dream.” “The Irish in Us” is one picture that should be marked as “must be seen.” FLAPPER.
