HOOVER'S WORDS ON EXECUTIVE POWERS RECALLED BY DURFY Senator Challenges GOP Critics to State What They Would Have Done Milwaukee, Wis. Aug. 23.—(P)— ‘Herbert Hoover’s own words were re- called Friday by an administration spokesman to refute the former pres- ident’s recent assertion that Roose- veltian policies of the last two years had “trampled upon” the “primary liberties of the people.” In the first reply of a Democratic leader to Hoover's recent denuncia- tion of the New Deal, Senator Duffy, of Wisconsin, told delegates to the second national young Democratic convention that New Deal policies were mild in comparison with those advocated by Hoover in time of emergency. Reading from Hoover's testimony before the house military affairs com- mittee in 1924, when a bill concern- {ng war policies was under consider- ation, Duffy quoted Hoover as having Baid: “I would also suggest that from a “ Jegal point of view a. general clause ‘Are you serving a MINUS MEAL? D., Aug. 23.—(P}— North Dakota manufactures account for only $7.60 out of every $100 in to- jtal state revenue, according to a re- port being prepared by the industrial development committee of the state planning board, headed by J. P. Cain, Dickinson. This sum has grad- ‘ually slipped from a flat $8 in 1921. “Increased processing of raw agri- |cultural products, and manufacturing jot staple commodities, must occur | before the business life of North Da- kota is stabilized,” Cain stated. “In ( 223 Seventh St. Butter, per Ib. Other fields which may offer promise and which are being investigated further, in- clude sodium sulphate, lignite bri- quetting, gold mining, and ceramics manufacture. The planning board report states that increased sales of general mer- chandise throughout the United States for the first six months of 1935 totaled 7.3 per cent by volume, and 49 per cent in cash, more than for a corresponding period a year ago. As compared with this national av2rage, North Dakota purchases to- taled 10.4 per cent greater.
