Its gay yarn is set against a col- legiate background but breaks away from the usual dear-old-alma-mater Pattern. “Old Man Rhythm” marks the re- turn of Rogers to the screen. He Portrays Johnny Roberts, a young col- lege blade, Blindly, he overlooks Edith Warren (Barbara Kent) who really Joves him, and loses his head over Marian Beecher (Grace Brad- Jey), an alluring campus gold-digger. Six new songs mark an innova- tion in filmusical technique in that their witty lyrics are an integral part of the plot. The well-known Broad- Wey composer, Lewis Gensler, has given every tune the lilt and spirit that spells popularity and Johnny Mercer has done an expert job with the lyrics. ‘The supporting cast which is com- of ace entertainers from the screen, radio, stage, vaudeville and night clubs, includes Dave Chasen, Eric Blore, Erik Rhodes, Betty Grable, Evelyn Poe, Johnny Mercer, John Ar- ledge, Joy Hodges, Douglas Fowley, Bill Carey, and Sonny Lamont. The picture stars Janet Gaynor in one of the most absorbing and tender love stories it has been her privilege to play; it exhibits for the first time the superior talents of the screen's new romantic sensation, Henry Fon- da, and it tells a magnificent tale in @ style that will leave you troubled and strangely happy at its close. “The Farmer Takes a Wife” deals with the turbulent glamour and vital- ity of the Erie Canal scene in the early 1850's, and draws its dramatic conflict from the love of a boy fresh from the farmlands for a girl who was attached to the water life. Fonda is the boy who takes to the canals to earn enough to buy his own farm. The life of the canal throws him into contact with Janet Gaynor, cook for canal boater Charles Bick- ford, and although he recognizes their intrinsic differences, Fonda cannot help falling in love with her.
