ARE TAKEN OUT BY THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, MONDAY, JULY 29, 1935 PROPOSED OWNERS)..rstaion ts reported aig Other Structures Near Comple- tion and Will Be Occu- pied in Near Future ALL ARTISANS STILL BUSY Commercial Building Said to Be Under Consideration for Near Future Building permits for two new homes were issued in Bismarck this week. Lloyd G. Wilson was authorized to ronstruct a frame dwelling, 20 by 16 feet in dimension, at 1618 Avenue B at estimated cost of $200 and A. J. Selby obtained a permit for a house at 612 Fourteenth St., to cost $1,500. It will be of frame construction and 24 by 30 feet in dimension. Noted on the permit was the fact that Selby expects to finish the base- ment this summer and will live.in it pending the completion of the house which he estimates may require two or three years, since he is doing his own work. Meanwhile, several homes placed under construction earlier in the sea- son are nearing completion, Joseph Shannon expects to move into the home which he has built at 807 Man- dan St., on August 1, as does George Dolph, who has purchased the house at 118 Avenue C, west, which was built by J. C. Beattie. All builders report that they are busy with considerable repair work and some new building in prospect for late summer and early fall. With few, if any, vacant offices and storerooms in Bismarck, some commercial building is said to be un- der consideration but plans have not yet progressed far enough to justify public announcement. comfortable customer selects merchan- Financial institutions report a num- ber of home purchases nearing the final stage and there were some ad- ditional sales of farm land during the week. Six Persons Injured In Devils Lake Crash Devils Lake, July 29.—(7)—Six per- fons were injured, three critically, ‘when a car driven by I. D. Trudaux, Fargo salesman, failed to make a| turn about three miles south of the city, and overturned shortly after midnight Saturday. Besides Trudaux, two others crit- {eally hurt were Helen Molsberry and Stimulant to Business in Many Sections insurable by the Federal Housing Ad- ministration under the modernization credit plan to $50,000 on commercial- residential and industrial properties increased interest in the possibilities offered by air-conditioning equipment is being reported from many sources. In many types of concerns air con- ditioning is now regarded as a neces- sity without which weather conditions create obstacles detrimental to busi- | ness. Originally adapted most widely te industrial use, in cases where con-| trol of air conditions was necessary to produce certain commodities pro- perly, it has made tremendous stcides in the past 4 or 5 years for general commercial use in such establishments as restaurants, theaters, department stores, specialty shops, funeral homes, beauty salons, barber shops, and a va- riety of other businesses. In such cases it has been found that air condi- tioning usually pays for itself in in- creased profits. Merchants have observed that a dise more quickly and buys more freely and confidently than a tired, uncomfortable one. The public, ex- periencing the benefits of air condi-|P' tioning more and more every day in theaters, railroad trains, hotels, and restaurants, knows its advantages and will patronize places where comfort is assured, according to merchandising | experts. Time after time places of business have noted large increases in business and the total elimination of the customary summer slump after installing conditioning equipment. Many find that they obtain their greatest volume in the summer when they gain business from competitors who do not match their facilities for comfort. Many storekeepers have re- ported that, with air conditioning, they not only have more customers but the average sale per customer is greater. Watching Watchman Watches Watchman OO Salem, Mass. Webb, state Legion athletic ofifcer, said that the Legion will be doubly repaid if the junior program results in increased sportsmanship and good citizenship regardless of financial success, Speaking before the regular noon luncheon meeting of the local Lions club, Webb ‘pointed out that this year over 3,000 North Dakota boys participated in the junior baseball program playing on 242 teams. The outstanding feature of the three-day state tournament was the splendid sportsmanship shown throughout, Webb said. He lauded the Capital City service groups and businessmen for their part in mak- ing the tournament a success. Musical entertainment on the pro- gram was furnished by Miss Har- riet Rosen, student of Mrs. Jeanette Frendburg, who played two piano solos, Philip Adelman and Ernest Elness were members of the program committee. At present the tax on a $56,000 income is $9,500. The proposed new schedule would make it $9,560. Bismarck Residents LEAGUE HOPES 10 ARBITRATE DISPUTE Ethiopia Makes Big Concession to Italy by Not Invoking Rule (By the Associated Press) ‘The League of Nations is prepar- ing for a council session Wednesday at which attempts to settle the Italo- Ethiopian dispute by arbitration will be considered. Emperor Haile Selaissie’s request for only the arbitration phase of the controversy to be discussed was considered a major concession, for Ethiopia had the right to invoke ar- ticle 15 of the covenant, under which the council eventually would have had to make recommendation for a settlement. Italy wants the adjourned concila- tion commission to concern itself on- ly with frontier incidents while Eth- jopia wants a decision on interna- tional boundaries. The Italian government prepared to state its case to the league and the British government, hopeful of peace, planned 1lth-hour measures ert war. Both British and Italian govern- ment sources said they were unaware of a clash between Italians and Ethiopians at Walkut (Ualkait), as reported in a London newspaper. The report said 40 Italians and 29 Ethiopians had been killed. An Ita- lian spokesman said it was highly! unlikely such an incident could have occurred without the government at Rome being informed. Northwest Business Shows June Increase Minneapolis, July 29.—()—City de- partment store sales in June were about 2 per cent larger than in May in the northwest but general busi- ness indices maintained the May level, and volume was considerably ahead of June, 1934, the federal reserve bank said Monday. Bank debits declined slightly in larger cities from May figures but gained in smaller agricultural cen- ters. Compared with June 1934, last month showed increases of 11 per cent in bank debits and 25 per cent in country bank clearings. Increases also were reported in volume of building permits, on contract, electric power consumption, linseed products ship- ments, country lumber sales, whole- sale trade and life insurance sales. Indications are that levels of busi- ness in July will be about the same as in June with a slight increase in country check clearing and a slight decrease in bank debits.
