Good Faucets Held Desirable in Home Well designed and well built fau- cets are available and should be speci- fied when ordering these fixtures for new or replacement plumbing jobs. Durable finishes and working parts should head the list in making choices. Dripping spouts, loose handles, and many annoying diffi- culties resulting from poorly con- structed movable parts can be min- imized with proper examination of these fixtures beforehand. REWIRE FOR SAFETY The insulation on electric wires laid under rugs receives considerable wear, and may break and result in @ severe and dangerous fire. Such danger can be largely eliminated by rewiring the home to provide for a sufficient num- ber of outlets for all lighting and power accessorics, including lamps, radio, toaster, and other appliances, BUILDING MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES her home distinctively attrac- tive. frame - window - screen and storm sash, SILENTITE is not a frame alone, nor is it a window only. The two built-in beds occupy a mini im of floor space and produce an interesting and decorative treatment of the corner of the room. The shelves, bookcases, and built-in lighting over each pillow are both utilitarian and attractive. Wide variation is possible in the treatment of bed posts and trimming for such bed corners. A colorful linoleum floor and a tastefully arranged desk, dresser, chair, and table create a charming effect. Modernization credit for auch work is obtainable at private lending institutions approved by the Federal Housing Administration. Woodwork, Wallpaper Form Color Harmony tion of the proper wallpaper and by Knowledge of the convenience of built-in furnishings in a room has prompted numerous wallpaper man- ufacturers to make a careful study of the relationship of wallpapers to adjacent woodwork. Such improve- ments are eligible for modernization credit available at financial institu- tions approved by the Federal Hous- ing Administration. The use of built-in furniture was popular as far back as the Elizabeth- an period. As a@ result, many room designs dating as far back as 400 years include built-in features, At the same time, wallpaper has been de- signed to fit any or all of these types of rooms. Wallpaper manufacturers have made a careful study of the require- ments for period rooms. Harmony Desired Where it is desired to build book- shelves, china closets, or similar de- vices into a home of an architectural Period other than that we now call modern, it is important that harmony between the new work and the older part of the room be maintained. First, in the case of a bookshelf, see that the edges are, as nearly as possi- ble, flush with the wall. Then have the paperhanger cut the paper to the very edge of the opening. Paint all but the outer edge of the shelving the darkest color to be found in the wallpaper. The edge of the shelves can be painted with the predominat- ing light color in the paper, or with the same shade and finish used for the paneling wherever paneling is in evidence. Paneling in a room may be worked out in three ways. Either actual wood panel and molding can be in- stalled—and this, though the most expensive way, is recommended for large, permanent homes. Or wall- paper simulating flat wood-grain panels can be applied and finished with actual wood trim of the wood simulated in the peper. This sec- ond method is quite satisfactory for smaller homes, apartments, and such public places as restaurants or hotel rooms. Inexpensive Method The third method, which is also the cheapest and permits of the most rapid change-over should changing fashions dictate, calls for one of the new washable wallpapers which are made to simulate painted paneling such as fg found in colonial and modern-classic architecture. These Papers are made for several color combinations. All doors, picture rails, window trim, shelf edges and other woodwork should be painted exactly the same color as this paneled wall- paper. Electrical outlets should be painted to match the woodwork or the wallpaper, depending upon their loca- tion. Depth of the book cases may be balanced by shelving and a corner closet in an adjoining room. A flat- toned carpet, carried flush to the wall, and accented with one or two scattered rugs keeps a room simple and avoids undue attention to floor lines. BACK YARD NOW IS PLAGE OF COMFORT America Follows Europe Trend Toward Greater Privacy for Family | in eae: i The past decade has seen a grad- ual trend in American home building toward the abolition of the front porch. Utilization of smaller plots of ground, desire for increased privacy, and the general desirability of “liv- ing in the back of the house” has been the reason for this trend. In general, the living room or sun porch, located either in the back or on the side of a house, have supplanted the front porch, There is nothing new in this prac- tice. European home construction for over a century has followed this same line. Today, the American home is designed to give maximum comfort, privacy, and convenience. Garages are built as an integral part of houses in many cases, located in the front, thus minimizing driveway costs. Kitchens are frequently built in the front also in easy access of the driveway to simplify delivery of groceries, packages, and the like. Through intelligent placing of the house and by careful landscaping, many interesting results are ob- tained. A hedgerow or attractive fence can frequently be placed so as to enclose the back yard, and in this} secluded space formal gardens, possi- bly a wading pool or lily pool, flag- stone terraces, and similar improve- ments can make the rear of a home | @ spot of great beauty and charm.
