The performance may not have pleased everyone. But its rapid fire action kept the audience awake. The longest monologue was Huey P. Long's. It lusted 15 hours by the senate clock, Father Goughlin and General Johnson figured in the feature dialogue—the “chocolate soldier- political padre” debate. President Roosevelt observed that the supreme court decision invalidating the NRA marked a return to the “horse and buggy” economic era. ‘These lines, too, earned wide attention: Justice Trenchard: “The sen- tence of the court is that you, Bruno Richard Hauptmann, suf- fer death.” Herbert Hoover: “The theories of this administration do not work.” assembly, Order of Rainbow Girls, which opened here Friday. S. Children More | Scientific-Minded | ¢ Minneapolis, June 28.—(?)— Children of the United States, Miss Jean L. Marquis told the American Association for the ad- vancement ‘of science Friday, are superior to children of other countries when it comes to scien- tific thinking, And boys have it all over the girls in explaining causes of such things as natural. phenomena, Miss Marquis disclosed. In her work at the University of Minnesota institute of child welfare, Miss Marquis said, she found that most of the results of casual reasoning in children are more dependent upon experience and training than they are upon development factors—that the children seem to explain things in the light of experience and training. Some 700 children ranging in age from eight to 16 years old were questioned on the causes of natural phenomena to gauge their development of reasoning. They were asked such ques- tions as “what makes the wind blow,” “what causes thunder,” “why does the candle go out when a jar is placed over the flame.” Most American children, she re- potted gave material or natural- istic causes as the answers. Conversely, investigators found children of other countries gave many “pre-logical” replies, or explanations in which some spirit or force was created in the chift's mind to explain what happened.
