HOMEMAKERS HOLD ~ANUAL GATHERING Miss Sommerfeld ard Dr. Wal- \ ster From College Staff Address Meeting . _ Nearly 200. Burleigh county Home- ‘makers, meeting here Saturday for their sixth annual Achievement day and picnic, heard Miss Edna North Dakota program Sorhmerfeld of the Agricultural college extension. service review their work of the year and ‘were addressed by Dr. H. L. Walster of the college on “The North Dakota Farm Home” at the afternoon pro- gram held at the Bismarck city audi- torium. . Mrs, A. B. Johnson of the Still unit, program chairman, presided and in- troduced, besides the main speakers, Mayor A. P. Lenhart, who gave the address of welcome; Mrs, G. A. Hub- bell of Wing, who responded; Mrs, A. H. Erickson of the Wilton Lakeville club, who led community singing, which was accompanied by Mrs. T. (. Torgerson of McKenzie, and Coun- ty Agent Henry O, Putnam. She also announced the entertainment fea- tures, including a playlet, “Sale on Bheets” given by the Menoken club, pantomime showing the actual card- ing and spinning of. wool offered by the Trygg-Cedar Hill group, an exhi- ition by the Bismarck high school ‘1 tumblers and a song by the Wing Club, At the close, Miss Sommerfeld conducted a recognition service for club presidents and project leaders. New Project Offered Mrs. Henry Larson of McKenzie, ‘county council president, presided at the morning business meeting, when Mrs. Joe Lewis of Driscoll, secretary- treasurer, read the minutes of the 1934 gathering. Points in buying linen, woolen and cotton fabrics and hosiery and ready- to-wear garments were brought out in an exhibit arranged in the aditor- ium foyer. A woven coverlet over 100 years old, loaned by Mrs. Tom Heth- erington, and a cotton plant brought by Mrs. Hoover of Moffit attracted much attention, as did also the Camp Grassick model, loaned because many of the Homemaker clubs contribute to the camp. Family Buying Important Miss Sommerfeld stated that one of the most serious problems confront- ing the homemaker is in making fam- ily purchases and explained that the study of the past year has been de- voted to the selection and care of bedding, household linens, hosiery and cotton in yard goods or in house dresses, She reported that 13 clubs are taking the project, 12 completed record books, 198 women were en- rolled in these 12 groups and 180 com- pleted the course. Elaborating upon the accomplishments, she said that 424 non-club members received help and altogether 622 women profited from the program. Putnam urged the members to make Plans for next year and announced that the 4-H club camp would open Sunday night at the Bismarck In- dian school; that the Agricultural Ad- justment picnic will be held on Wed- nesday, June 19, and that grasshop- per poison will be available when the pests are reported. Pleas for Improvements Dr. Walster urged improvement not only for the exterior of the farm home in North Dakota but for the inter- fors which should be modernized and made more convenient. He quoted Statistics regarding the need for re- pairs of farm homes and asked that when farm incomes become more se- cure, the money be budgeted and spread so that homes can be made better places in which to live. He Stressed particularly more beauty in architectural design, more careful planning and the elimination of pres- ent fire hazards, Dr. Walster declared his intention to fight for federal ap- Ppropriations to provide electrictiy and other improvements in rural districts and asked for cooperation toward that end. In closing, Dr. Walster made a plea for inernal migration and keeping the youth of the state at home instead of going to eastern states and said: “I take my hat off to the inspiration and leadership which your Homemakers clubs are showing year in and year out.” . Former Local Woman Dies Suddenly Sunday Bismarck relatives have been ad- vised that Mrs. T. E, Davidson, 31, former local resident, died suddenly at her home at Aberdeen, 8. D., Sun- ‘day morning. Mrs. Davidson formerly was Miss Lucy M. Snyder, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George W. Snyder, and @ sister of Nellie Snyder, who died three years ago. She was born at Beltrami, Minn., and a few years later moved with her parents to Bismarck, where she received her education in the public schools. After graduating from Bismarck high school she took a commercial college course and then was employed by the North Dakota Workmen's Compensation bureau un- til her marriage to Mr. Davidson, which occurred on June 25, 1925, Mr. and Mrs. Davidson moved after their marriage to Eau Claire, Wis., and from there to Aberdeen, Mr. David- son being connected with the Benson sisted of group singing led by Mrs. Torgerson, a comic reading by Mrs. G. T. Hughes of McKenzie, club reports, @ short talk by Putnam and a dis- cussion of next year’s program by Miss Sommerfeld.
