A WHEN RUBBED UP IN WATER, - AT THE MO Hayes, Montgomery In ‘Vanessa’ Film ‘Two of the cinema's most -brilliant stars, Helen Hayes and Robert Mont- gomery, come onto the screen of the Paramount theater Tuesday and Wed- nesday in one of the season's out- standing photoplays. It is “Vanessa: Her Love Story,” adaption of Hugh Walpole’s saga of! the spectacular Herries family. Brimming with high romance, rich with the idealistic sweetness of the last generation, the story tells the tender tale of a woman who, loving one man with all the blind adoration of youth, is persuaded to accept mar- riage with another. Helen Hayes has seldom, if ever, equalled her performance in the role of the Walpole heroine. And certain- ly Montgomery never has done a finer or more believable bit of work than as first, the wild Rogue Herries, and then the modern Benjie who inherits his ancestor's wild strain. With the stars is Otto Kruger in ‘one of the season’s most difficult roles could have played it with more sin- cerity. With these is an outstanding cast, ach of whom deserves special men- Man’s Duty to Man Is Basis of Picture Just where does a man’s duty to humanity stop and his duty to him- self begin? This question is treated with amaz- ing forcefulness in “Whom the Gods | Destroy,” featuring Walter Connolly, Doris Kenyon and Robert Young which shows tonight and Tuesday at the Capitol Theatre, As John Forrester, a theatrical pro- ducing genius whose greatest ambl- tion is to perpetuate his name in the theatre through his son, Walter Con- nolly is faced with the question of saving his own life in a ship-wreck or giving his place in a lifeboat to another. Previously he has encoune tered a communist who has called him a capitalistic pig and challenged him with the question: “Did you ever make @ sacrifice for a human being?” His imagination fired by the question, he battles alongside of offi- cers of the ship to stop terror-stricken men from trampling women and children in their frenzied efforts to Bet to a lifeboat. As the ship is about to sink, Forrester thinks of his wife and adored son.
