COUNTY EXTENSION AGENT RECOMMENDS BEST SEED GRAINS Shipment From Distant Points Makes Careful Selection of Vital Importance Because of the large quanities of seed grain that will be shipped in from other states and Canada to sup- Ply the drouth acres for the spring planting, Robert Montgomery, assist- ant in the Burleigh county extension | seed offices, has warned farmers to pur-| {ment supplies available. This is also! chase only seed of recommended and ‘adapted varieties, “Seed from grain grown where climatic and growing conditions are different may be entirely unsuited for North Dakota,” Montgomery said. Varieties of seed recommended for ‘use were listed by the assistant coun- ty agent so that farmers might make the best selections. Montgomery pointed out that it was imperative ‘that all seed be treated before plant- ing and recommended the ceresan, copper carbonate or formaldehyde methods as the best seed disinfect- ants. Speaking of the seed varieties, ‘Montgomery said: “Ceres and Marquis wheats are the only two varieties of hard wheat] found to be hardy and Ladak, a new} worthy of much consideration. Ceres is rapidly replacing Marquis because of its greater rust resistance, higher yields and hardiness in the face of grasshopper infestatign. “Mindum and Kubanka wheat in the durum varieties are the best suit- ed to local climatic conditions. Min- dum yields best under normal condi- tions but Kubanka has greater rust resistance and therefore is probably better suited to this area. “Victory oats have been found to produce the best in this locality, Trebi Barley Is Best “Low rainfall and humidity is not suited to production of high quality malting barley. If Trebi seed is sown the yields will generally be high and may be used advantageously as live- stock feed. “Seed corn presents a particularly |difficult problem in that home grown | of the recommended varieties is scarce and there are no govern- the case in legume and grass seeds. AS @ substitute the millets, cane and sorghums can be grown successfully. Siberian millet is best suited for this purpose while Turghai and Early For- tune lead in the hog or proso type millets. ‘ “Brome grass becoming popular. of sweet clover are hardy the Yellow Blossom type is best sulted to the drier areas. For alfalfa the Grimm and Cossack varieties have been “We Thank You” is the most suitable | perennial variety while crested wheat | Grass, because of its hardiness and, great drouth resistant qualities, is fest) “While all recommended varieties | ___ THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY-8, 1935 variety, is very promising. The high price of the grass, alfalfa and clover seeds warrants planting only on the best prepared and most suitable lands.” Definite Revival Is Seen by Trade Review New York, Feb. 8—(#)—The ad- vancement recorded for practically all branches of trade since the turn of the year is carrying with it each week more convincing proofs of a general revival, Dun & Bradstreet’s Weekly Trade Review says. After the brief interruption, at- tributed entirely to the severe weather conditions prevailing in many parts of the country, “there now is more uniformity to the rising trend,” the agency says, with production and dis- |tribution about at an even pace, al- \though the favor still leans towards the former. | Schilling Wrttis, \M.
