Six N. D. Prep Schools FORKERS CAPTURE | THREE BERTHS ON MYTHICAL ELEVEN Wheeler of Fargo and Burck- hardt of Devils Lake Hon- ored for Second Time MIDGET GETS CAPTAINCY Sorsdahl, Lips Receive Honor- able Mention; 47 Mentors Take Part in Poll BY L. F. YOUN ROM (Associated Press Sports Writer) Grand Forks captured three posi- tions on the coaches’ 1934-All-State high school football team to strength- en the school’s claim to the unof- ficial gridiron championship of he Dakota. Forty-seven gridiron mentors, the greatest number ever to cast ballots in an all-state election, participated in the poll conducted annually by The Associated Press. They nomin- ated 165 players to the mythical all- state eleven. Of the army of stars nominated, players representing only 13 schools placed on the first three teams with but six schools honored on the first eleven. The coaches’ choice of three Grand Forks men—Allan Dragge, James Hallen and Wendelin Burckhardt—in- directly amounted to an endorsement of the school's powerful undefeated Aggregation as the mythical state he Forks aggregation, vic- forious over seven opponents last season. also were selected West as captain of the second team and Ros- enberg and Rood for the third team. Wheeler Named Captain Captaincy of the first all-state went to Fullback Ernie Wheeler of Fargo who garnered more votes than any other gridder. Porter Trubey was the second Fargo man. Like- wise, Jamestown had two all-staters Richmond and Deery. The re- maining four positions were divided between Minot, Devils Lake, Lisbon. and Wahpeton. It was the second consecutive sea- son that all-state honors have been bestowed upon Wheeler of Fargo and Burckhard, of Devils Lake, both back- field men. The composite first team is a heavy but fast eleven, averaging 172 pounds with a backfield average of one pound less; the third group is nearly as heavy as the first, bur the second team averages about eight pounds less per man. A consensus of coach-comment de- scribed Burckhard, Wheeler and Burckhardt as the three greatest triple threat men ever had on one all-state eleven. Ranked with the trio as a brilliant ball carrier, the voting coaches ex- sssed enthusiasm over Decry's remendous” speed, fearless drive, and towering defensive strength. Describing Devils Lake's Burck- hard, one coach commented he is “a college player coasting through high school competition.” Backfield Powerful All three of Deery’s mates are ex- Ceptionally proficient at kicking. eeler is a slippery runner and hard line plunger; Bi hardt an ideal player in ability, temperament and team spirit. The scrappy forward wall is built out from the dependable John Ring- ’ dahl, four-year man at Lisbon whose Play-starting passes from center were considered “near perfect.” De- fensively he showed ability to diag- nose plays, making him an_ ideal roving center, plugging holes in the line or pulling out for protection it passes. On either side of him are guards, Mallen and Oliver, who were the defensive bulwarks in the lines of the Grand Forks and Wahpeton teams, respectively. Hallen was a hard and accurate blocker; fast. with ex- ceptional drive. Oliver also excells at blocking. He was outstanding both offensively and defensively. His leadership qualities together with aggressive, alert playing earned he 200-pound Mackenroth of Minot ‘iis tackle berth, along with fight- ) ng Porter Trubey of Fargo whose ability shone constantly. Experts at that all-important busi- tess of grabbing passes, Richmond of famestown and Dragge of Grand /*orks won the end posts. Besides ) javing gluey fingers, Richmond ex- elled at blocking and Dragge in Seressiveness with both quick to get own under punts.
