THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1934 DEMOCRATS 10 BE WELL REPRESENTED || AT NEXT SESSION Party Picks Up Several Senate Seats and Numerous Places in House Election of a number of Demo- cratic candidates to the North Da- kota legislature, both in the house and senate, featured legislative contests in which returns were available ‘Thursday. Reports so far have been scatering and in many of those districts report- ing final determination of close fights for seats have not been made, but it appears likely the windup of the legis- lature tabulation will show a sizeable group of Democrats victorious. In Morton county the Democrats made inroads on the previously solid Nonpartisan representation. J.T. Mc- Gillis defeated the veteran “Bill” Mar- tin for the senate and Karl Keidel, another Democrat. won one of the house seats. The other two places went to W. J. Godwin and Gus Schaus, Non- partisans. In Ramsey county Frank Gassner and R. J. Downey, Democrats, were elected along with Former Speaker Edwin J. Traynor, IVA Republican. Cass county will send four Demo- crats to the house from the ninth (Fargo) district, only L. L. Twichell winning in the Republican column. ‘There were only four Democrats run- ning. In Barnes county A. C. Nelson, an- ti-Langer Republican was elected to the senate from the 38th district but James Thoreson, running with the Langer endorsement, was elected to the house. Sam Oklesby an anti-Lan- gerite, was unopposed for the house in the other Barnes district. In Grand Forks county the sixth district elected Nick Nelson of Emer- ado to the senate and George Saumur to the house, both are Democrats, Oswald Bratten, a Nonpartisan was elected to the senate from the sev- enth district but D. C. Cunningham, Democrat, was elected to the house. In the fifth district a Nonpartisan and a Democrat were running neck and neck for the house post. In this district J. E. Eastgate is a senate holdover. In Traill county, which went strong- ly for Moodie, IVA Carl H. Brunsdale was re-elected, along with J. A. Dahl and L. C. Odegaard, Nonpartisans. In Stutsman county, home of W. J. Flannigan, a Langer leader, the Dem- ocrats apparently swept the boards, winning all four house places. With returns incomplete in Ward county, two Republicans appeared sure of victory in the 29th district but two Democrats had narrow leads over Republican opponents for the other two places.
