THE RISMARCK TRIBUNE, MONDAY, NUVEMBER 5, 1934 UNBEATEN CHICAGO, ARMY, DARTMOUTH, ELEVENS HUMBLED Twelve Gridiron Teams Stand Out in Nation After Sat- urday’s Encounters CRUCIAL GAMES THIS WEEK Stanford Faces Washington; Rice Tackles Arkansas; Navy Meets Notre Dame New York, Nov. 5.—()- ‘week-end’s spectacular di the football situation—sectio! is—was virtually unchanged Mond: Nothing that occurred in the san- @uinary battling of last week when Army, Dartmouth and Chicago all were whipped for the first time, could shake such standouts as Minnesota, Ala- bama, Stanford, Princeton, Rice, Illi- nois, Santa Clara, Navy, Tulane, Syracuse, Louisiana State and Michi- gan State from their “penthouse” Positions atop the football world. Crucial engagements loom both for Stanford and Rice o.. Saturday. Paced by big Bobby Grayson, Stanford Jooked more and ~1ore like the class of the Pacific Coast conference in walloping U. C. L. A., 27-0, last week but the Indians will have to vault ‘Washington's undefeated and untied huskies in their next engagement. ‘The Owls of Rice, southwest leaders, return to conference competition after 27-0 “breather” with Texas A. & I., to face Arkansas, unbeaten but tied eurprisingly by Texas A. & M. Otherwise, the temporary leaders fre menaced mostly by intersectional rivals this week. Navy, whose great back, Buzz Borries, led the midship- men to a decisive 26-0 rout of Wash- ington & Lee, will travel to Cleveland to meet Notre Dame, thoroughly wal- oped by Pitt, 19-0. Pitt, meanwhile, hopes her galaxy of fleet backs will be able to get loose for a touchdown or two against Nebraska, big six leader, ft Lincoln. At least one perfect record ‘will go by the board: when Michigan State and Syracuse collide at Syra- use. Tulane Plays Colgate Two of the southeastern conference contenders, Tulane and Louisiana Gtate, will travel into the north with the former getting the toughest as- signment—a battle at New York with Colgate’s Red Raiders, Louisiana, meanwhile, will tackle George Wash- ington. Minnesota, whose rugged line and etar collection of backs, Lund, Al- fonse, Kostka, et al., buried Michigan, 34-0, under a second-half assault, should continue its march to at least @ share in the big ten title against Indiana. Illinois, which capitalized on one early break to down Army in a driving rain, encounters Northwest- ern while Purdue, the only other un- defeated conference contender after {ts sensational 26-20 conquest of Chi- vago, tackles Iowa next. Princeton, getting a “breather” with Lehigh after its 19-0 victory over Har- vard and Alabama, southeastern pow- erhouse, meeting Clemson, should win easily. Santa Clara's Bronchos, whose He with Stanford and 20-0 verdict over California projected them right into oe spotlight, have an open Summarized, sectional prospects and programs for the week are about as follows: East—The Colgate-Tulane, George ‘Washington-Louisiana State, and Sy- vacuse-Michigan State games share Aintersectional interest with Georgia's invasion of New Haven to battle Yale, eurprise conqueror of Dartmouth. Du- quesne will play Oklahoma A. & M., and Army's Cadets against Harvard. Pop Warner's Temp!e Owls, who downed Holy Cross, 14-0, last week, will try to keep an, undefeated record in- tact against Carnegie Tech. Tackle Indiana Middle West—Big Ten conference offers a full schedule for the first time this season. While Minnesota, Illi- nois and Purdue are seeking to keep) their slates clean, Ohio State will battle Chicago and Michigan will play Wisconsin. Nebraska and Pitt, Navy and Notre Dame, add the intersect fonal flavor. Kansas State, only ap- it challenger for Nebraska in the Six, should keep going at Mis- souri’s expense. South—Competition eases off in both the southeastern and southern conference. MIDGET ELEVEN Dickinson High Scores 20-0 Conquest of Unbeaten Conference Team Dickinson, N. D., Nov. 5—(#)—The Dickinson Midgets, ‘playing the last game of the season here, defeated a hitherto unbeaten Beach squad, 20 to 0, Saturday to capture the North Mis- souri Slope conference championship. ‘The first score was chalked up in the first quarter after a 75-yard march on straight line play, McKen- zie, full, going over. Try for the point by McKenzie failed. The second score was made early in the game when Dickinson took the ball on the Beach 17-yard line after Jones, Beach half, got off a poor punt into the wind. Kunde, end, went over the final stripe on @ lateral tossed by Robertson, quarter. Mc- Kenzie cracked the line for the extra point. . Early in the third Dickinson recov- ered a Beach fumble on the Beach 32-yard stripe and from there drove the ball over for the third touchdown. Tuma was good for the extra point. Jones, Beach half, regarded as one of the best backs in western Dakota, made some gocd gains, but Dickinson held Beach to only five first downs. Beach never threatened. Nassett, tackle -who broke his hand in the Bis- marck game, did not play in the Dick- inson line and Clarke, regular full- back, was benched. Tavis, star Mid- get half, was injured and taken from the game in the second quarter. Roger Babson says the time is near for a coalition of the Democratic and Republican parties.
