SHE'S SO UIVACIOUS ~~ ‘s ‘The Cat and Fiddle’| Make ‘Caravan’ Great Ramon Novarro and Jeanette Mac- Donald, two of the screen's foremost, romantic singing stars, are united at the Capitol Theatre in one of the really memorable photoplays of the year. It is “The Cat and the Fiddle,” which, as you probably surmise, has nothing whatever to do with cats and very little with fiddles. It is high ro- mance flavored with heart-drama and spiced with some of the most glorious | insure music of recent years, “The Cat and the Fiddle” opened yesterday and scored an instantan- cous hit. The picture ic memorable for sev- eral reasons. First, perhaps, because |ling it gives romantic Ramon Novarro an opportunity to really make love in that whimsically delightful way that every woman adores. Second, because it gives Jeanette MacDonald her first really romantic role; she was inter- esting and amusing in her love scenes with Chevalier in recent films, but not until now has she been given an + opportunity to demonstrate her amaz- ing emotional depth. And third—and perhaps it should have been first—because “The Cat ‘and the Fiddle” embodies such glori- ous harmony that, when Ramon ai Jeanette sing it, it will linger in mem- ory for many a day. ‘This: (Fascism) is a passage from | one civilization to another. It signifies | ‘that it will be an economy which does not place the accent on individual! Profit, but is more concerned with the , collective interest.—Premier Mussolini. ‘This country will emerge from the Gepression because it has too many Charles M. THE SAME OL If we had bought a home wi it would now be all paid for. One of the most brilliant screen Productions seen here in many months opens Thursday at the Paramount Theatre. This was the unique and lavish musical spectacle, “Caravan,” produced for Fox Film by the cele brated continental director, Erik |Charell, Outstanding as Charell’s first film jeffort in Hollywood “Caravan” should & long and distinguished ca- reer for this gifted producer-director in America. His initial production for Fox combines splendor and setting and a lavishness unusual in sound films with subtle comedy and spark- dialogue. The sweeping exteriors of “Caravan” are matched in effec- tiveness only by the delightful inter- ludes of intimate comedy. Perhaps topping all other features of this production are the amazing new technique and the unique use of music that stirs you with its rhythmic swing. The music, especially com- posed for the film by Werner Richard Heymann, serves to accompany and Point the action. Outstanding are such numbers as the “Wine Song,” “Ha-cha-cha” and “Happy, I Am Happy.” A brilliant cast performs this ro- mantic love story of the Tokay wine harvest. Charles Boyer, continental star, appears as a dashing Gypsy mu- siclan and Loretta Young is a gay countess. Other principals are Jean Parker, Phillips Holmes and Louise Fazenda, while such distinguished Players as Eugene Pallette, 8. Aubrey Smith, Charley Grapewin and Noah Beery are assigned to strong roles. Fascism has contributed more than any other factor to the feeling of in- security that has brought the possi- bility of widespread war to the fore- front—Walter M.
