Oddly enough, they made their names in the theater in the same play and at the same time. When “Little Jessie James” opened at the Longacre Theatre Aug. 15, 1923, Miss Hopkins had the role of Juliet and Boles was Paul Revere. This was Boles’ first appearance on the stage, and although Miss Hop- kins had danced in “The Music Box Revue” the previous season, it was in “Little Jessie James” that she first attracted attentic In Broadway's Front Rank It was such favorable attention that the Georgia-born girl was fairly jaunthed on a career that has placed her in the front rank of America’s capable young actresses. After six years, during which she was starred} . 4 in a succession of Broadway produc- tions, she went to London for a sea- son. Returning to New York, she capitulated to Hollywood's coaxing and in 1930 began the film career that has been as triumphantly suc- cessful as her career on the stage. John Boles was a Texas lad who graduated from college, looked to- ward a medical career, went to France to serve as an interpreter and came home again’ before it ever entered his head to go on the stage. When he did decide on the theater as a profession, he was doubly armored for the battle for recognition in that he could both sing and act. As it turned out, it wasn’t such a battle.
