This highly volatile director's “The |Scarlet Empress,” which comes Wednesday to the Paramount Thea- tre starring Marlene Dietrich, was previewed recently before a select but |diverse audience, critics who judge |the cinema from different points of | view. Since a preview is a sort of lab- oratory test, the opinions expressed startled the Paramount organization |which is fairly well experienced in this matter of post-production de- | bates. am These critics of the cinema gath- theatre and discussed the picture, some with heat, others with the dis- turbing calmness of dissectors, It is true that not all of these picture-wise considered the Von Sternberg cinema in the same favorable light. But this, after all, was the case with his other produce tions, “Blue Angel,” “Morocco,” “Dis- honored,” “An American Tragedy,” and “The Blonde Venus.” All agreed however, that the director had ad- ; voneed the art of the screen a full step beyond the imagery and auda- city of “Intolerance.” Everyone seems to be out of step but Mr. Gorman and his strike lead- , ers.
