Mae Southern Siren In Belle of Nineties’ Mae West, the lady who invented “c'mup and see me, sometime,” has gone down to Dixie and raised havoc this time. In her newest, gusty, laugh-and-drama-filled screen spec- tacle, “Belle of the Nineties,” which opened Saturday at the Paramount Theatre, Miss West has returned ty the Giddy Nineties, hour-glass cos- tumes, switling hats and ostrich plumes for her setting. In the principal male roles are Roger Pryor, New York stage star, who recentiy made his Hollywood debut; John Mack Brown and John Miljan, who acts the “tall dark” menace. Kathryn DeMille, Stuart Holmes, Warren Hymer and ‘Woods appear in the supporting cast, and Duke Ellington, rhythm king, fur- nishes a tantalizing musical back- ground for Miss West's vocal rendi- The story opens in St. Louis where Miss West, as the reigning queen of burlesque, suffers reverses in her love for Roger Pryor, her fistic hero, and departs for New Orleans to take the South by storm and charm. In New Orleans she meets John Mack Brown, ® gallant youth who loves her, and John Miljan who eves her diamonds. Pryor comes to New Orleans for a championship bout.
