Paramount Theatre, on Tuesday, ‘Wednesday and Thursday, was found | by Harold Lioyd in his mail several days after the first preview showing of his picture in a Southern California city. It is indicative of the intense feeling with which the Clarence Bud- ington Kelland story is followed in| screen form. Lloyd introduces a new way of handling political corruption and racketeers in his first picture in two years, resorting to the wisdom of the Chinese, with whom he was raised, in the handling of situations which are rampant in this country today. There is nothing of political propa- ganda in “The Cat’s Paw,” even though the story is set around the adventures of a young American mis- sionary, who, returning from China to find @ wife, is thrown into the mael- strom of a typical American mayor- alty election campaign. Lloyd set out to make @ picture entirely different from his past rou- tine, and in “The Cat's Paw” all ad- vance criticism indicates that he has fulfilled his aim. With him in the film will be Holly- Wood's newest romantic team Joel McCrea and Sallie Blane. The story is that of a sanctimon- fous rascal who poses as @ church- man and is, in reality, a card sharp. The “deacon” (Churchill) finds him- self in @ small Kansas town in which are two young lovers, McCrea and Miss Blane, whom he has known in @ previous escapade. They have no desire for him to reveal their iden- tities and he is careful that no one know his. The churchman ingratiates himself into everyone's confidence, advises against the sin of playing cards, but rather than spoil the fun of other People, graciously agrees to sit in the various poker and bridge games.
