Schumacher, second only to Dizzy Dean among the league's pitchers, ‘was credited with 18 victories against five defeats Friday, chalking up his 18th Thursday when the Giants belt- ed out a 16 to 5 decision over the Brooklyn Dodgers. And in those 18 victorious games, his club mates have backed him up with a total of 215 hits, averaging 12 each time. Even when he couldn't win they did almost as well for him. Those figures are somewhat better than their season's average of ten blows a game for 107 contests. The big right-hander from Dolge- ville, N. ¥., did pretty well by himselt Friday, giving the Dodgers only six hits, including a pair of homers by Len Koenecke, but the team’s hitting was the real feature of the contest. They counted 15 times against Ray Benge, Watson Clark and Owen Car- roll and didn’t waste a hit. Y., Aug. 10.—(#)—Leo Diegel's parting shot at the Oak Hill Country Club's east course—a sizzling 66 that equalled the course record— has earned the jittery-nerved veter- an first money in the Rochester cen- tennial-Walter Hagen golf tourna- ment. That grand finish, five strokes un- der par, enabled Diegel to wind up with a two-stroke lead over Denver's perennial runner-up, Ky Laffoon. Diegel's 276 was made up of rounds of 70-69-71-66. Harry Cooper, Chicago, and Her- man Barron of New York likewise posted 66's on their last crack at the course. Cooper’s gave him a total of 282 and a tie for third money with Willie MacFarlane of Tuckahoe, N. Y. Barron's sent his 72-hole total to 285 and a tie with Art Hulburt of Tor- onto for seventh place, two strokes behind George von Elm of Detroit and Jimmy Hines of Green River, N. Y.
