te 7] Tribune’s Grain, Livestock and Market Report for Thur., June 21 MARKET DULLNESS PERSISTS; TRADERS AWAIT INPROVENENT Few Metals Show Strength; No Special Pressure on Oth- er Groups Noted New York, June 21.—(#)—Stocks loafed through another extremely dull market session Thursday and prices, on the whole, recorded only small changes. A few of the metals exhib- ited quiet strength and there was no especial pressure on other groups. Sentiment appeared to have improv- ed somewhat. The close was slightly irregular. Transfers approximated 530,000 shares. U. 8. Smelting shares got up more than 4 points at one time, but yielded a large portion of this gain. Howe, Sound, ex-dividend, was a bit higher| Briggs Bris as was Cerro de Pasco, and fractional advances were shown by American Smelting, Dome, McIntyre and Ana- conda. The alcohols, including Na- tional Distillers, American Commer- cial and Schenley, displayed rallying inclinations. Wilson “A” gained & point and some of the sugars were moderately higher. Allied Chemical lost more than 2 and others down DuPont, General Motors, Chrysler, v, S. Steel, Westinghouse, Consolidated Gas, Santa Fe, N. ¥. Central, Union| Com. Pacific, and Standard Oil of New Jer-| con bey. While grains suffered another re- lapse, and stimulating business and |Cont. industrial news was scarce, traders showed great urge to unload their|Corn holdings of equities. At the same time, buyers were few. Most of the usually active operators were said to be out of the market for the time being. Treasury Starts Silver Purchases Washington, June 20.—(?)—The treasury assumed the task Wednes- day of arranging to start silver pur- chases that eventually may exceed 1,300,000,000 ounces—a course made mandatory by the new law. Secretary Morgenthau guarded plans for acquisition of this huge stock. The time and amounts of the purchases were made discretionary to prevent speculators from boosting prices on the government. President Roosevelt Tuesday night signed the act to bring silver to a one tc three ratio with gold in the nation’s metallic monetary stocks. A brief ceremony, attended by Con- gressional silverites, was staged at the White House for signing. The treasury served notice that all those transferring silver at a profit since May 15 must file returns on their gains by July 15. A 50 percent tax on the profits must be paid. The new law was held by some of the congressional silverites who strug- ged long for its pasage to be the longest silver stride taken by the country since demonetization of the metal nearly 60 years ago.
