To say that the picture is excellent entertainment is merely stating the mild truth. To say that it is a mod- ern classic that could be expected dvom the producer and director who made “Dinner at ight,” “Dancing Lady,” “Eskim«: ittle Wome: “Trader Horn” and many other hits, 4s hitting more nearly at an idea of this new pictures entertainment qual- Sties. Gable in “Manhattan Melodrama” mt last returns to the type of role the fans have wanted since “A Free Soul.” He plays a big-shot gambler, ducky at cards and lucky at love, ‘willing to bet a dollar or his life on | the turn of a card—a powerful and dramatic figure of the metropolitan demi-monde. Pitted against him is William Pow- ell as his life-long friend, now district @ttorney and ambitious for further political advancement. Between them, loved by both, is Myrna Loy. It is she who fights for Gable’s life when this pal, Powell, is forced to prosecute him for murder. There is not a dull moment in “Manhattan Melodrama” from the first scenes, in which are dramatically re-enacted the General Slocum hor- ror of 1904, an excursion steamer fire in which more than 1,000 lost their lives. From the opening scene to the thrilling climax, the film is replete with intense dramatic interest, excit- ing situations and breath-taking sus- | Pense. In the role of Rankin, small- | time carnival owner, Holt is said to Provide a powerful characterization equal to any in his distinguished ca- reer, Committed to the penitentiary for 20 years for the inadvertent death of @ small town “hick” in a carnival \brawl, Holt returns after completing his sentence to a world unlike the one of his youth. Bitter and resentful for his incarceration, he turns big-shot racketeer. His flourishing profession |receives a powerfully dramatic a 4 (daughter, who all these years had be- |lieved him to be dead. |. ‘The climatic denouncement has been hailed by cinema critics as a stirring screen episode.
