Clark Gable, William Powell and ‘Myrna Loy are the stars. From the opening scene, the pic- ture is absorbing entertainment. One of the -most thrilling scenes ever filmed is the prologue which re-en- acts the fire and panic aboard the excursion steamer General Slocum in New York harbor in 190¢—a tragedy in which more than 1,000 were killed. Out of this horror emerges Blackie Gallagher, played by Clark Gable,j| and Jim Wade, played by Powell.| friends, inseparable. Their friendship endures through the intervening years, and in early middle age Gable is a big-shot gamb- ler, a powerful and dramatic figure of the city's night life. Powell, still his ely Loy. Out of this strange set of circum- stances comes the body of the story— Popular Jack Holt Stars in ‘Whirlpool’ Jack Holt, perennially the popular | ——— ===" Screen idol of thousands of theatre- goers, has clicked again in “Whirl-| WASH TUBBS pool,” his newest starring vehicle which will be shown at the Capitol Theatre Thursday and Friday. Fast moving and well-knit, the plot concerns the career of Buck Rankin, @ small-time carnival owner, who, while wedding chimes are still loud in his ears finds himself sentenced to \the penitentiary for twenty years on la charge of manslaughter. His bride, Helen, swears by their love that she will await his release. Realizing the injustice with which this course of action would burden her, Rankin forges the warden’s name to a letter informing his wife that he has been drowned in an attempted escape. The story speeds on to a tense dramatic denouement in which Shel- don makes a tremendous sacrifice to Protect his former wife and his daughter from ruinous exposure. Holt delivers a telling perform- ance as Rankin, and later as Shel- don, squeezing everything possible out of his part. Allen Jenkins, as “Mac,” gives his| ALLEY OOP usual more than adequate portrayal, and Jean Arthur is convincing as “Sandra.” England.
