BALLOONING \ SPIDERS TRAVEL THROUGH \\\ THE AIR ON SILKEN PARACHUTES’ THEY HAVE BEEN SEEN HUNDREDS OF ALES AT SEA, FLOATING IN MI0-AIR,, | AT THE MOVIES | Paramount Picture Features Night Life New York’s smart night world moves before the camera in a glam- orous and dramatic parade in “Man- hhattan Melodrama,” new Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer three-star feature ‘which opens tomorrow at the Para- mount theater. Clark Gable, William Powell and ‘Myrna Loy share starring honors. Besides marking Gable’s return to ‘the screen after his recent triumphal personal appearance tour in the East, the picture is noteworthy because it is Powell's first appearance as a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer star, and be- cause it marks the elevation to star- dom of Miss Loy. It is the first time Gable and Powell have appeared together. The picture brings about the reunion of Gable and Miss Loy, who were hail- ed as a new romantic team in “Men in White,” their recent hit. “Manhattan Melodrama” presents Gable as a powerful and dramatic figure of the demi-world of New ‘York, a “big-shot” gambler who does not hesitate to use violence when he is crossed. He is in love with Miss Ley, who is the wife of William Powell, district attorney and Gable’s life-long friend. ‘The situations that arise out of this unusual combination of charac- ters make a story that moves swiftly and dramatically to an unexpected conclusion. Marie Antoinette, Mohammed, Mar- tin Luther, Louisa Alcott, St. Augus- tine, Schiller, Van Dyke, Goldsmith, Andrew Carnegie, Lafrence Sterne, Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stev- ensoni were all born in November. The story, written by L. G. Bloch- man, who is well versed on life in teeming and mysterious India, has to do with the “Bombay Mail,” a fast express train racing from Calcutta to’ Eombay, and the people on that train. These include a much-disliked and feared British colorfial governor, a maharajah, an American miner with | fortune in rubies, an aide to the Sovernor who fears the loss of his Position, a scientist with a live cobra in @ suitcase, a supposed Russian spy wife, and an Eurasian crook, to men- tion only a few. Edmund Lowe does a fine job as In- Spector Dyke. Onslow Stevens and the beautiful Shirley Grey supply the love | interest. John Davidson is excellent |@8 the Eurasian crook, and Hedda | Hopper, Ralph Forbes, Jamieson Thomas, John Wray, Tom Moore and | Brandon Hurst put life into their | roles, |, Much of the fascinaticn of the pic- ture lies in the bizarre setting, a new background for a mystery story. Of chief interest is the Indian train, the quaint stations, and the feeling one has of the teeming millions in the xe country of the countless se- cre! “Magic fountains” that turn on at the sound of a human voice are in use in several large cities; a photo- electric cell does the trick.
