OF THOMAS, BOUGHT 200 ACRES OF VIRGINIA LAND FOR A BOUL OF CUNT / AT THE MOVIES | Barbara Stanwyck in ‘Gambling Lady’ Is Coming to Capitol | Barbara Stanwyck has been given | an entirely different role from any; which she has portrayed, in the new ‘Warner Bros. production of “Gam- bling Lady,” which comes to the Cap tol theater tomorrow for a two-day run, in that her character part is/| both a glamorous and a sympathetic one. In the majority of pictures she has portrayed hard and somewhat loose | ‘women such as she did in “Baby | Face,” “Ladies They Talk About “Illicit” and “Ten Cents a Danc In these she made a success by her sheer power of characterization, rath- | er than by winning sympathy for the Part. In “Ever In My Heart,” while there | was nothing of the play lady about} her, she was placed in drag surround- 4.8 as also in “The Purchase Price.’ These were supreme characterizations | but lacked the glamor of her present role, In “Gambling Lady” she is a gambler, but the squarest, straightest shooting poker player that ever shuf- fled the pasteboards. Not only is she on the level in cards but in the game of love and life. She can take it on the chin and does, by sacrificing her love for her husband in order to save him from the charge of murder when he gets into a mess with another woman. As the gambling lady she plays only $m the fashionable clubs frequented by millionaire men-about-town and in the brilliant Casino of Monte Carlo. Later, wedded to a wealthy society man, she is seen in the palaces of the ‘upper world, although she is never ad- verse to taking a fling at the ponies or putting some society beauty over the hurdles for her jewels or what have you. —_——- ‘Thank the Lord for the gossip in the little towns.—Dr. Paul H. Voelker, Michigan state superintendent + Six Film Stars Romp in Latest Crosby Vehicle Bing Crosby, Carole Lombard, Burns, and Allen, Ethel Merman and Leon Errol— That's a cast of which any single member could “carry” a picture—but | they are all together in a refreshing n South Sea island adventure ilmusical at the Paramount Theater Monday. “We're Not Dressing” is the Para- mount vehicle in which the six stars of Hollywood combine their talents to reate a swift-moving sixty minutes | Of song and action. Crosby is a sailor aboard the yacht of Miss Lombard. Her guests are Miss Merman, Errol, and the fortune- hunting princes, Jay Henry and Ray Milland. Shipwrecked, this band finds haven on a South Sea island, where George urns and Gracie Allen are hunting big game. How Bing puts his “guests” to work and how George and Gracie get involved in the situation create a climax of love, song and laughs. Norman Taurog adds “We're Not Dressing” to his long roster of suc- cesses. The story is from an original by Benjamin Glazer, adapted for the screen by Horace Jackson, Francis Martin and George Marion, Jr. They have preduced a clean, rapid- fire picture which proved in its first showing that it will be an outstand- ing attraction for the entire family.
