Madge Evans! ean Hersholt! Karen Morley! Phil- ips Holmes! These are the names in the amaz- ng aggregation of stars who appear together in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Bensational picture, “Dinner at Eight,” mow showing at the Paramount The- mtre as the most remarkable picture $ilmed in the last decade. The picture is based on the play by George 8. Kaufman and Edna| Ferber, which ran on Broadway for fore than a year. It describes the emotional experiences of a hetero- geneous group of people, who are brought together at a dramatic dinner party. Shifting its focus from one angle to another, the camera picks out a retired musical-comedy star, a ship- Wilder facing bankruptcy, a “washed- up” matinee idol on the verge of sui- ‘ede, an unscrupulous millionaire and ints faithless wife, a Broadway the- trical agert, a philandering young @octor, a Park Avenue hostess, a cook with a toothache. Each of these in- cividuals has his or her own emo- tional conflict and then they are brought together in one blasting cli- max. This million dollar cast, comprising srost of the outstanding stars in Hol- Aywood, sets a new record for lavish- ness in film entertainment. It has never happened before, and in. all Vkelihood it will never happen again. Farrell and Davis Co-Stars at Capitol Charles Farrell and Bette Davis are co-starred in Warner Bros.’ “The Big Shakedown,” which comes to the Capitol Theatre tomorrow. Farrell and Miss Davis, who play for the first time together, make de- ghtful sercen lovers, Farrell will be remembered for sterling characteriza- uons in such recent pictures as “Aggie Anpleby, Maker of Men,” “The First Year,” “Wild Girl” and “Tess of the Storm Country,” and in many others with Janet Gaynor. Miss Davis, who recently has risen |to stellar roles, is best known for such pictures as “Bureau of Missing Per- sons,” “Ex-Lady” and “The Working Man.” Ricardo Cortez is the villian of the production. He does not hesi- tate to put his own sweetheart on the snot, when he jilts her for another light 0’ love. His most recent pictures are “The House on 56th Street,” “Big Executive” and “The Torch Singer.” Other members of the cast are \Glenda Farrell, Allen Jenkins, Henry | O'Neill, Phillip Faversham, Robert | Emmet O'Connor, John Wray, George | Pat Collins Adrian Morris, Dewey | Robinson, Ben Hendricks, George Cooper and Renee Whitney. The picture is a thrilling drama dealing with a new type of racket- eering which has come in since Repeal | made the lquor game less profitable. It 1s based on the story “Cut Rate” by Sam Engels and Niven Busch and was adapted for the screen by Busch and -?ian James. John Franics Dillion di- rected. FOR RENT One unfurnished apartment.
