And it usually spells “Ro- ance.” mance.’ This fact is demonstrated in “By Candlelight,” sophisticated Continen- tal comedy which comes to the Cap- itol theatre on Sunday midnight, Christmas Day and Tuesday, with Elissa Landi and Paul Lukas in star- Ting roles, and a cast which also in- cludes Nils Asther, Esther Ralston, Lawrence Grant, Dorothy Revier, Lois January, Warburton Gamble and/| other favorites. Several scenes in the picture take place in the grounds of a little car- nival in Austria, showing a crude- ness which is unheard of in the, from United States of the present day. The motive power for the merry- go-round for example, is provided by a horse harnessed in the centre of the contraption and pulling the carousel around after the manner of a treadmill whenever the ate tendant desires to take his custo- mers for a ride. The tradi- tional carnival spirit is everywhere Present, and the peasants on holiday bent enjoy themselves to the full- est extent. ‘This carnival is visited by Kissa Landi and Paul Lukas when the MOVIES | ‘Cast of the Century’ Delights in Splendid ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Wholly unlike anything ever done before, this unique picture is highly entertaining. It has an unusual cast, aptly termed, “the cast of the cen- tury.” It includes, besides Charlotte Henry as “Alice,” Richard Arlen, ‘Roscoe Ates, Gary Cooper, Leon Errol, Louise Fazenda, W. C. Fields, Skeets Gallagher, Cary Grant, Raymond Hatton, Edward Everett Horton, Ros- Polly Moran, Jack Oakie, Edna May Oliver, May Robson, Charlie Ruggles, Alison Skipworth, Ned Sparks and Ford Sterling. It is an artistic masterpiece of cos- tume, set and design; it is a riotous comedy; it is unusually well directed start to finish; it is photo- graphed perfectly. In short, Holly- ‘wood never has done anything quite like it before. Story? No need to tell it.
