HUNT BANDIT TRIO IN NORTH DAKOTA Men Who Robbed South Dakota Institution Were Last Seen Near Border ~ Aberdeen, 5. D., Dec. 15. — (%) — Search for the bandit trio which robbed the First State Bank of Wol- sey of $1,000 at noon Thursday was mtered in North Dakota Thursday night after the robbers released near “he North Dakota border the two women they abducted, The kidnaped women mptorists— Mrs, Frank Yoder, 71, and. Miss Lydia Roeber, 20, both of near Wessington— were given their freedom shortly be- tore 6 p. m., after the stole a car at Houghton and headed north- ward, presumably to North Dakota. The three robbers took possession «f the women's car shortly before 1 2. m,, and kept them as hostage near- 4y six hours while they drove from a noint near Wessington to Barnard, a town 18 miles north of Aberdeen. Although heavily armed, the rob- bers made no use of their guns in iheir dealings with the women and were described as being extremely Jovial during the 150-mile drive. They took a roundabout course, avoiding} oll towns and cities. All Were Young Men The bandits were all described as being about 35 years of age and of nedium size. The last car they stole was a 1933 Jour-door (Plymouth) sedan. Two of T= accompanying graph const!- tutes a vivid explanation of one reason why the prices for corn and hogs have been so low the last few years. The main reason {s the severe decline in the export demand for United States hog products since the 1919 peak. In 1910-14, European nations took the equivalent of nearly six million hogs. This was only » moderate ex- Port level, but the total United States hog production at that time was in good balance with the com- bined domestic and foreign demand. UNITED STATES EXPORTS OF HOG (Each hog represents 1,000,000 head.) Under the stimulus of the World War, foreign purchases of our hog products jumped to the equivalent of about seventeen milion hogs. But since the war, our exports have dropped back again to the equivalent of about four million hogs. This de- cline has been due toa rapid restora- tion of hog production in European countries since the war, particularly in Germany and Denmark, and more recently because of tariffs and of quotas which limit the quantity of imports. Meanwhile, hog production in the tly. the prod ucts no longer shipped abroad have become excess products on the home market and have driven down hog prices. Some adjustment to this changed demand must be made it hog prices are to be raised toa moro favorable level. The corn-hog pro- duction-control program, now being offered by the Agricultural Adjust- ment Administration, will help farm- ers bring about this necessary better balance. them rode in it while the third drove the women in their car to a point near Barnard and gave them directions to aet to Aberdeen.
