SIDE GLANCES - - By George Clark MYSTERY ADVISERS VISITING ROOSEVELT Professors Who Are Studying Purchasing Power Report on Findings Hyde Park, N. ¥., Aug. 7.—(P}— President Roosevelt gave a once over to the complex monetary and gov- ernment fiscal situation Monday as he enjoyed the quiet of his ancestral home. The “mystery men” who have been studying the purchasing power of the dollar—professors George Warren of Cornell and James H. Rodgers of Yale were on the visiting calendar Monday with James Warburg, the president's monetary expert at the London econ- omic conference. Just what the visit was about re- mained as much a mystery as the pur- Pose of the secret study the profes- sors have made in Washington. They say they cannot discuss it. Roosevelt is watching and saying nothing but there is no sign of any change in his Policy to improve the domestic econ- omic situation and-remain away from world stabilization until he thinks the true levels of the dollar and other currencies have been reached. A busy week-end gave the president @ full report on the recessed London economic conference from Secretary Cordell Hull; a personal talk with Governor Lehman on New York state affairs; and a summary of world ef- forts for wheat production control from Henry Morgenthau, Sr., the chairman of the delegation to the Geneva, wheat parley. Harry Joe Brown directed. ‘The film was produced for Paramount, by Charles R. Rogers. Lowe sticks his tongue in his cheek im this drama of a womans devotion w a black sheep, enacting the role of a slick “con-man, pursuing elusive dollars and dames. His exploits in- clude the sale of words to a diction- ary, tea to a bootlegger. In his lei- sure time, he promotes dames; finds, however, that love has promoted him when he meets Nancy Carroll. The two join hands as partners in crime, sweep across country, loot the pockets of “dubs” in sundry get-rich- quick schemes, finally evolve a deal to sell glass coffins to undertakers. It vwurns out so well that Nancy per- suades him to go straight. Lowe puts his head to real business, turns, success.. Suddenly two crooks he walked out on in the old days, come to life, demand to be paid off. Lowe, on the biggest spot of his career, finds his partner has abscond- ed with all his cash, has 30 minutes to talk himself out of death. And he tries. in an exciting climax that whips on to a smash conclusion. MOVIES Fay Wray’s ‘Big Brain’ Role a Departure After portraying the terror-stricken leading woman of the 50-foot ape in “King Kong,” Fay Wray portrays a society belle in “The Big Brain” at the Capitol Theatre tomorrow and Wednesday with George E. Stone and Phillips Holmes. As Cynthia Glennon, Miss Wray's part is a distinct departure from her Portrayals in previous pictures. Here she is seen as the heiress who re- | buffs the advances of a racketeer and swindler, thereby endangering her lover. In “King Kong,” Miss Wray was the beauty pursued by the great ape. In “The Most Dangerous Game” she was the quarry in a human “ani- mal hunt.” In “Doctor X” she was the terrified daughter of the man- creating doctor. In “Mystery of the Wax Museum” she portrayed another victim of a crazed sculptor who wants to encase her body in wax. Miss Wray and Stone and Holmes comprise the featured leading cast of “The Big Brain,” directed by George Archainbaud, with Minna Gombell, Reginald Owen, Lilian Bond, Lucien Littlefield, Sam Hardy and Reginald Mason, An Oregon man has made wooden dishes, cutlery and other implements for explorers planning an expedition to Antarctic regions where the intense | cold would cause metal articles to in- jure the flesh. The Eighteenth Amendment is still a part of the Constitution of the United States and will be until 36 letters as may be necessary to conform to this policy. PAT’S PRETTY GOOD HERSELF! states vote for repeal. The prohibi- tion enforcement laws of North Da- kota are still on the statute books, but the enforcement officers are evident- ly asleep or cowed. No one has a “permit” or “license” that gives him a legal right to sell beer in North Dakota. Those who sell have Presumably paid the federal tax and have a U. 8. tax receipt which they call a “license” or “permit”, The Possession of this federal tax receipt. is prima facia evidence that they are violating the law of North Dakota, The 3.2 beer law passed by Con- gress gives the right to sell in those states where the law of the state does not prohibit such sale. The law of this state prohibits the sale of beer. The violation of one law opens the door for the violation of all law. The failure of state, county and local of- ficlals to do their duty means an in- crease of crime and lawlessness of all kinds. Automobile accidents have already increased at an appalling rate. At this writing the number of deaths ! Mil TAT thus far this year in the state from automobile accidents is 44 as com- pared with 23 for the same period last year. Is it not time for the law- abiding citizens of the state to wake up and demand _that the enforcement officials, who afe elected and paid to enforce the law, do their duty? Spineless, cowardly officials are a Menace to good government. It is not too early to begin now to plan to nominate and elect officials who are men of principle, courage and back- bone. If there ever was a time that we needed men “who live above the fog, in public duty and in private thinking” that time is flow. Elizabeth Preston Anderson. Sheldon, N. D. Editar’s note: .
