THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1938 “We are playing the last rubber now, dear. Can’t you come down and help with the iced tea?” — A KNOT, 4S USED IN NAUTICAL TERMS, ISA SPEED OF SNAKE AND CAME OUT VICTORIOUS. (1029 BY bea semvice, mes a2 = THIS CURIOUS WORLD — | RE-AVYE OF MADAGASCAR, DRINKS BY DIPPING ITS | AT THE MOVIES | Play By O’Neill Is Basis of New Screen Drama “Strange Interlude” and “Anna Christie” created history on the American screen, anl acquainted the nation’s movie-goers with the genius of their foremost playwright, Eugene O'Neill. Hence, the announcement that another of the O'Neill dramas serves as the basis for a talking pic- ture will be greeted with the enthu- siasm that an event of such impor- tance in film annals deserves. “The Constant Woman,” based on ® play by O'Neill, is the feature at- traction scheduled for presentation tomorrow and Friday at the Capitol Theatre. Advance reports describe it as a photoplay of power, beauty and genuine dramatic intensity. En- acted by a stellar cast, among whom are Conrad Nagel, Leila Hyams, Tommy Conlon and Claire Windsor, “The Constant Woman” is a picture not to be missed. The story revolves about the in- fluence which one woman wields— even after her death—over the lives of three persons—her son, her hus- band, and a sympathetic actress whom she had known. When it is discovered that the wife had been unfaithful, and that her son’s father Was not her. own husband, the latter loses his grip on life and becomes a derelict. The young son, resenting the care which the “other woman” lavishes on his father, suspects their ‘Midnight Mary’ Carries a Strong Dramatic Wallop A smashing dramatic punch in every few minutes of the fast-moving action is offered in “Midnight Mary,” drama of crookdom that opens to- morrow at the Paramount Theatre. Build-up of dramatic tension is ac- complished by a novel introduction of Loretta Young and Una Merkel in leading roles as 12-year-old chil- dren. Their costuming and action is Played against backgrounds built in Proportions to make them look smaller. Disturbing events shatter the lives of the youngsters as they grow into girlhood and at maturity they are deeply involved in the op- erations of a gang of crooks. A Convincing Portrayal Loretta Young delivers the most. convincing role of her entire career, combining the delicate pathos of her tole in “Life Begins” with the phys- ical allure of her recent triumph in “Employees’ Entrance.” She handles a difficult characterization with a sure sense of dramatic values from awkward girlhood to appealing ma- turity. | In one of the “heaviest” screen |Portrayals in recent months Ricardo Cortez gives a powerful performance minute he appears on the screen. He is so utterly detestable to other char- acters in the story that he contrib- utes much of the strength of the pic- motives as an affront to his mother’s| ture. ‘ memory, Told against a colorful background of tent-show and circus life the pic- ture is said to be skillfully directed by Wictor Schertzinger.
