THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 1933 ROOSEVELT SIGNS GOLD CLAUSE LAW ‘Approves Measure Providing For Bond Payments in Legal Tender Notes Washington, June 6—(#)—On the federal lawbooks is a declaration that all promises to pay with gold may be legally settled with paper money. President Roosevelt Monday night signed the resolution voiding the “gold clause” written in billions of government securities and more bil- ions of private bonds and mortgages. It had been adopted by the house ana senate within a scant 10 days of the time it was submitted to them, un- heralded by previous announcement. Since gold has been unavailable since March for any payments, pub- change in the existing situation, mere- jy ratifying it. It does, however, re- Neve the treasury of having to prom- ise gold payment in new bond issues, @s well as serve formal notice that liberty and all other bonds which may fall due or be called will be settled in Jegal tender. j Extensive new financing is due in the immediate future. Meanwhile, the campaign against gold hoarders is in full swing, with department of justice agents beginning their calls on 1,000 persons named on treasury lish as suspected of holding more than $100 in gold each. All are being asked to turn it in unless they already have done so, and warned of the punishment if they fail. The to- tal believed now being hoarded amounts to $600,000,000, Those who refuse to part with the gold or gold certificates may have their names published before any at- tempt at prosecution is made.
