Thats a strangely paradoxical situation for a person to find himself in—it is diffi- cult to think of the words “fame” and ‘frame” in a reciprocal relationship Yet, it is the plausible. if novel, state of affairs that the hero of “Decep- tion,” Columbia film, snowing tonight &t the Capitol Theatr>. is thrust into The hero we speak of is Nat Pen- dleton, a stalwart screen player, most recently seen in “By Whose Hand?” Unaware that he has won his renown under false pretenses, he wears the | raiments of false glory not wisely. but | too well. The featured rele is played by Leo Carrillo. The veteran player of char- acter roles is cast as a crooked pro-! moter behind the strange career of| Nat Pendleton. Carrilo has contrib- | uted one masterpiece of character- | {zation after the other in his histrionic | tareer—“Mister Antonio,” “The For-| eigner,” “The Hell Gate of Soissons,” “Girl of Radio,” “The Broken Wing” his role in “Deception” is typical of | the hard. colorful parts he is ast | A strong cast supports him. Colman Great in “Cynara”; Critics Call Film His Best Ronald Coleman, star of a long ling of Samuel Goldwyn screen successes, comes to the Paramount Theatre today in “Cynara,” his latest and in the opinion of his friends, his best United Artists picture. The film is Presented by Mr. Goldwyn and was directed by King Vidor. As was the case with “Arrow- smith,” his last picture, Colman trods new ground in “Cynara.” It was largely because of the sense of con- trast, as a matter of fact, that Mr. | Goldwyn selected the story, and it was just as much of a contrast to Director Vidor, too, for this is his | initial effort in urbanity and sophis- tication. Returns to Drama A couple of years ago it began to look as if Ronald Colman was taking his place as one of the screen's most celebrated comedians. This was all right except that in getting a stellar comedian the screen would be losing ene of its finest serious actors. Henry Stephenson, who originated the role of John Tring in the stage version of “Cynara.” repeats his part with Colman, and, because of his wide experience before motion pic- ;ture cameras, makes of it an even more lovable character than it was on the stage.
