Battle of Wits The fun revolves around the at- tempt of Truex, as an author of mur- der mystery stories, and Miss Merkel, as his society girl fiancee, to plan a “perfect crime” for a band of crooks, who threaten them with death if they fail. Against the half-dozen desper- ate thugs who hold them captive in a deserted house, the diminutive Truex pits his nimble novelist’s wit, and suc- ceeds in turning the laugh on them. For eleven months Truex starred in the Broadway production of this play, and the skill of his droll per- formance on the screen gives evidence that a new star has been found in the Hollywood firmament. As in “Red-Headed Woman,” Una Merkel surpasses all expectations as a come- dienne. Deft characterizations are given by such lesser members of the cast as Edward Arnold, John Miljan, C.
