~ BLUE JAYS DEFEAT STRONG FARGO FIVE "IN 22-21 THRILLER Harold Westby’s Field Goal in Last 30 Seconds Is Climax To Spectacle | i | | } BISMARCK COASTS TO WIN Mandan Scores Easy Vic- tory Over Satans Grand Forks, Mandan, Jamestown end Bismarck advanced to the semi finals of the North Dakota Class A state championship basketball tourn- ament here Friday by victories in the first round, which was marked by two hard-fought games and two compara- tively easy contests. Grand Forks was to face Mandan in the first semi-final Saturday morning at 10 o'clock while James- town was to battle Bismarck in the second penultimate at 11 o'clock. First round scores: Grand Forks 16; Minot 14. Mandan 28; Devils Lake 18, Jamestown 22; Fargo 21. Bismarck 34; Enderlin 22. By far the most sensational game of the first round was the spectacular battle between Jamestown and Fargo, in which the Jays eked out a slender one-point margin when Harold West- by sank a field goal 30 seconds be- fore the final gun spat. Playing without their star guard, Erik Peterson, who Thursday under- went an operation for appendicitis, ; the Jays staged a brilliant battle! ‘throughout, with Francis Nordin, who took his place, filling the gap in a Manner which could not invite ad- verse criticism. Ingstad Magnificent A large share of the credit for the| victory, however, must go to Robert Ingstad, ‘center, who played a great game throughout, scoring five field goals and two free throws, besides be- ing a tower of strength on the de- tensive. Ingstad virtually “played his heart out” but not until the final minutes of the game did he show the effects of the strain. Merrild Augspurger, guard, and Vernon Kittleson, forward, also play- ed creditable games. Augspurger play- ed a brilliant defensive game besides scoring a field goal and two gift tosses. ‘The two teams battled on practical- ly even terms in the first period, which ended 4 to 4, but the Jays spurted out in front in the second quarter and were leading as the half ended, 13 to 8. Fargo came back in the third quar- ter to within one point of the Jays but another Jamestown spurt put the ys back in front by five points again. Two minutes before the game | ended Fargo jumped into a 21 to 20) lead to set the stage for Pinch Hit-| ter Westby's valuable field goal from under the bankboard. | The defeat of Fargo was an upset 1 in view of the fact that Jamestown |* had lost Peterson at the last hour. The Midgets had no outstanding stars, but Joe Tuor and Wayne Fisher were the leading scorers from the! field. | ‘Though Enderlin got off to an early | lead over Bismarck, the Eagles were unable to hold their advantage long, | with Bob Finnegan, Demon forward, | dropping in field goal after field goal.) Finnegan scored Bismarck's first 15 points and 16 out of the Demons’ 18 points in the first half. In the sec- ond half, Frank Lee, the other Cap! tal City forward, took over scoring duties and scored four field goals and four free throws. In all Finnegan counted 17 points and Lee 14. Content to Coast Bismarck soon established its su-| Periority and was content to coast throughout, with Coach George L.; Hays sending in his three reserves in} ‘the last period. Harold gun, scoring four field goals and four tree tosses. Bismarck led 11 to 5 at the end of the first quarter, 18 to 10 at the half,! and 29 to 14 as the last canto opened. | Enderlin was the only Class B en-, trant in the tournament, having de-| feated Valley City, a Class A team, in| ® challenge play-off. Grand Forks and Minot opened the to-4 margin as the first quarter ended | ‘but the score was knotted at 8-all as the half came to a close. Central had a 13 to 12 lead as the last canto Harley Dahl, forward, and Myron YFawbush, guard, were Minot’s most s. Grand Forks unless it was Walter Millette, clever guard. Grand Forks can thank its ability at the free throw line for its victory, Central having counted 10 points on free tosses compared to a half dozen for their victims. Mandan’s clever floor play and sharpshooting netted an easy victory over Devils Lake.
