| SIDE GLANCES - - - By George Clark | HIS CURIOUS WORLD — | T THE Vanity Street’ Shows Women’s Side of Case ‘The one side of present-day condi- tions that the movies have heretofore neglected— unaware of the great dramatic power of its poignancy— was brought to the screen of the Cap- | itol Theatre in “Vanity Street,” with Charles Bickford and Helen Chandler in the principal roles. In a mannef subtle, understanding and heart-rending—as well as amus- ing—“Vanity Street” shows how the ‘women of the country “took it” when ‘Wall Street shivered convulsively and sent its economic catilepsy like the Plague throughout the country. Columbia has chosen to reveal this feminine side of modern life by tell- ing the moving story of Jeanie Gregg, portrayed by Helen Chandler, whom ‘we meet so mentally low, so poverty- stricken and so despondent that she heaves a brick through a drug store window in order to get a free meal ticket in jail, where at least she can eat and sleep without fear of the morrow. The story moves with swift inter- est and catching poignancy, deliver- ing a colorful and realistic spectacle that is not so spectacular that it over- shadows the dramatic plot that Gert- » Tude Purcell has written into the . Script from the story by Frank Cavett and Edward Roberts, two of Colum- bia’s younger writers.
