21 COLLEGES ENTER || ovr BoaRDING HOUSE Ff | VARIETY OF EVENTS Joe M’Cluskey of Fordham Dop- ed as Leader in Assault Upon Records HIGH JUMP MARK MAY FALL Ralph Metcalfe, Dusky Mar- quette Star, Outran Top- pino Saturday Night New York, Feb. 27.—()—The in- tercollegiates, the track and field meet which usually manages to pack as many thrills into 12 events as the! other meets of the indoor season pro- | vide in all their long programs com- bined, brings the 1933 winter cam- paign up to its grand climax next Saturday. The original entry sheet for the 12th annual indoor meet of the inter- collegiate association of amateur ath- letes of America listed 523 runners, jumpers and weight men from 27 col- | leges. Of these some 300, the pick of the lot, will compete. Joe McCluskey of Fordham, winner of the two-mile race in record time for the last two years, is figured as the leader in the assault on the rec- ords. The Fordham ace has been al- Most unbeatable indoors this season, retaining his title in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase at the national indoor championships last Saturday and shattering the unofficial world mark for the event. ‘The oldest of the I. C. 4-A indoor records, the high jump mark of 6 feet 4% inches which was set by Leroy Brown of Dartmouth in 1922, seems sure to fall as George Spitz, N. Y. U. junior, makes his debut in varsity competition. Spitz also retained his national title, jumping 6 feet 8% inches, just a quarter inch short of the world indoor record, which he al- 0 holds. He was ineligible last year. Here is the list of national cham- pions who were crowned Saturday: 35-lb. weigh throw-Mortimer Rez- nick, N. Y. U. 1000 meter run—Glen Dawson, Tul- a, Okla., A. C. Ralph Metcalfe of Marquette uni- versity came from behind Saturday night to nose out Emmett Toppino of New Orleans, defending indoor sprint king, in the world record time of 6.7 seconds in the 60 meter final, a feat- ture of the national indoor senior A. A. U. track and field championships. Prank Wykoff of Southern California ‘Was third. Metcalfe, in capturing his first na- tional indoor title and adding it to the American outdoor championships he won last summer, equalled the pre- vious best time for the distance, made by Toppino in the quarter final heats. The old mark of 7.2 seconds also was surpassed in every preliminary. In @ spectacular finish which saw both collapse in the last lunge for the tape, Gene Venzke of Pennsylvania, turned the tables on his Kansas rival, Glenn Cunningham, for the first time to win the 1500-meter race. Venzke ‘won by inches in 3 minutes, 55.4 sec- onds, just short of the world indoor record.
