ee WOMAN'S PLACE IN POLITICS REVIEWED DURING CONVENTION History of Feminine Influence in National Affairs Trac- ed By Mrs. Smith Political activities of American ‘women from the earliest days of our nation up to the present were re- viewed in a talk given by Mrs. Ray R. Smith, Bismarck, on “Women's Part in Politics,” during the convention of the North Dakota Federation of Non- partisan Women’s clubs here. Mrs. Smith is the wife of the new deputy Gtate auditor. Mrs. Smith’s address follows: To paint a true delineation of the part which women have played in politics, one would need to go back beyond the dawn of history. In Amer- ica the woman voter has been going to the polls for a little more than a decade, yet since the election of George Washington she has been a vocal factor in presidential elections. If she could not vote, her husbands and sons could. If she were not per- mitted to mark ballots she could tell emphatically in the presence of her children and grandchildren just how they should be marked. Moreover, her position was steadily strengthened by the woman's movement which even- tually was to provide her with a polit- ical weapon even more potent than the tongue. y The deplorable thing about women’s interest in politics in the early years was that the women who took the The much-feared women’s vote was| portions tonight. apparently a myth, since only about THE Weather Report FORECAST ismarck and vicinity: Partly ‘cloudy tonight and Saturday; not much change in Portion tonight and warmer southeast and extreme east For Minnesota: Partly cl in 30 per cent of the total presidential| north, generally fair in south tonight vote had been cast by women and/and Saturday; not so cold in south- that had been same proportion as the men’s vote between the two candidates, Harding Four years later the situa- On paign leaders agreed that there and this too being split on the same|over the southern Plains States while basis of Pressure area, accompanied these results cam-) cold weather, is centered over Dish, Was|Idaho and divided in virtually the auc and in east and north ay. ; l GENERAL CONDITIONS pressure aréas, accompanied by warmer weather, are centered over the western Canadian Provinces and a high by Nevada.
