TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1932 FORMER PEASANT IS PLACED IN CONTROL OF GREAT FORTUNE Obtains Legacy From Mrs. M’Cormick in Return For Annual Payments Chicago, Aug. 30.—(P)—A love for mathematics resulted Tuesday in ele- vation of Edward A. Dato, former Russian peasant boy, to the helm of control of large portions of the vas: Edith Rockefeller McCormick real es- tate holdings. Whether he continues control is problematical but at present Dato, now middle aged, has assigned to him @ legacy of 5/12ths of Mrs. McCor- mick’s estate and remains as direct- ing trustee of the Edith Rockefeller McCormick trust, formed by Mrs. Mc- Cormick, her close friend, Edwin Krenn, and Dato to further Mrs. Mc- Cormick’s real estate projects. Krenn, named _ beneficiary for 5/l2ths of the estate three weeks prior to Mrs. McCormick's death, as- signed to Dato, his partner and friend, any legacy Mrs. McCormick might give him and also his interest in the trust for a consideration of $24,000 annually for life. The will provides that if any of Mrs. McCor- mick’s other heirs attempt to break it, then their share also reverts to Krenn. In 1906 the youthful Dato, all his worldly possessions in a pack on his back, trudged out of his revolution- torn native village of Sinjava, near Kiev, Russia. His father, a Jewish grain collector for the government. and his mother, were dead, leaving young Dato penniless. Fired with ambition to become an electrical and automotive engineer, he finally worked his way to Switzer- Jand and entered a _ preparatory school. It was there he met Krenn, a young student of architecture. Years later a chance glance at a newspaper put Dato in the real estate business. He read his old friend Krenn was a Chicago visitor—an in- timate of Mrs. McCormick. He called Krenn and the latter invited him to become a partner in a real estate ven- ture. When Mrs. McCormick con- ceived the idea of a trust to manage her real estate projects, Dato was ob- tained to aid. Dato, the man, has his idiosyncra- cies. For example, despite his knowl- edge of automobiles, he refuses to own one. The only riding he does is in a company-owned car. He still lives in a none-too-prosper- ous looking building where he moved with his wife and children years ago. Nightly he climbs four flights of stairs to reach his modest six room flat. About his office, he is known as a hound for details. “He makes more fuss over a dropped dead match on the floor than he would if one of the offices burned down,” Paul D. Angell, general sales manager for the corporation, said. Lone Bandit Robs Bank at St. Paul St. Paul, Aug. 30.—(?)—A bandit held up the Morris Plan Co. bank Monday night and took $2,058 after locking the manager and a girl em- Ploye in a vault. The bandit first imprisoned his victims and then rifled all cash drawers in the bank, which is open for business Monday nights. M. L. Dean, Minneapolis, manager and Mary Blaylock, the employe, freed themselves after a few min- utes by taking apart the vault lock with tools kept inside for that pur- Pose. The bandit is believed by police to be the same one who robbed two au- tomobile supply stores recently of nearly $1,000. AIR RACERS EXPECT T0 SHATTER MARKS AT OHIO CARNIVAL Nation Spanned in 10 Hours, 19 Minutes, to Set New Record Monday lenge of super-speed, and with it, perhaps, the world’s airplane record, Tuesday faced the 1932 national air races. With a new trans-nation race king crowned Monday, in the person of James H. Haizlip, who brought the Atlantic and Pacific within 10 hours and 19 minutes of each other, the classic’s main goal was to find a suc- cessor to the landplane speed throne occupied since 1924 by France. Not since 1925, when the air corps! swept to victory in the now extinct Pulitzer trophy race with a speed of 248 miles an hour, has the air races been able to boast of true racing pro- gress, and the feat of the Ferguson, | Mo., pilot of striking a faster gait in clipping nearly an hour from the for- mer Los Angeles-to-New York record was taken as a cue for an assault on France's mark of 278.480 miles an hour. This attack was scheduled to move; under way today in dashes over a three-kilometer course, though the readiness of the pilots indicated the true tests may come later after mechanics have spent more time in priming untried mounts for super- effort. The flight which Haizlip paced across the country, Monday, followed by J. R. Wedell, Patterson, Ia., Col. Roscoe Turner, Los Angeles, and Lee| Gehlbach, Mount Clemens, Mich., added four of the fastest planes of | the races to those already on hand | which are destined to find their measure in the straightaway dashes. | Major James H. Doolittle, deposed! trans-nation record holder, has a/ thick, well-streamlined racer which| Russell Boardman, transatlantic fly- er, injured in a flight test, had plan- ned to fly. Quito’s Streets Are Littered With Dead| Guayaquil, Ecuador, Aug. 30.—(P)— The governor of this province received | a telegram Tuesday from Alberto | Martinez, president of the Ecuador- | ian senate, that the situation at Quito was chaotic and that conservative forces backing Neptali Bonifaz were being directed by friars guiding the attack on federal forces from the church towers. A real conservative revolution has | developed since the mutiny of part | of the army garrison on Saturday, the message said. There is still no legal government and it appears that a conservative dictatorship is in con- trol despite earlier reports that the government was in the saddle. Sen Martinez asked for reinforcements and these were sent immediately by train, Dispatches from Quito said the fighting there was still in progres The streets were littered with bodies of dead. It was expected there would be a general attack on the capital Wednesday.
