- Dry Agents Demolish ‘Last Man’ Drinks Toast to Departed Comrades; Thinks It May Be Last Time Stillwater, Minn., July 22—(#) ~-Captain Charles Lockwood, the “last man” of the Last Man's tlub, started home Friday after closing the records of the old or- ganization of Civil war veterans for what he believes will be the last time. Thirty-three chairs draped in black, each representing a char- ter member of the club which ral- lied for four decades around an old bottle of Burgundy wine, stood before the 89-year-old vet- eran Thursday night as he paid a solemn tribute to his comrades of fighting days. The wine was saved as a toast for the last man when the club was formed in 1885. Lockwood sipped a toast from it in 1930 when for the first time he was alone. Last night he observed the club's old anniversary but he drank his toast silently, outside of the scheduled program of a ban- quet where he was the honored guest, and then in water. Next year he feels he will be unable to come from his home at Chamberlain, 8. D., for another meeting on the ground where the club was founded and the toast by the last survivor conceived in jest. Greetings from President Hoo- ver on whom he called when he visited Washington a year ago, from organizations of veterans and from soldiers who fought in the Civil war and their widows were read to him. _ Still at Jamestown: Jamestown, N. D., July 22—(P)— ‘Work of demolishing a huge still and equipment seized by dry agents on a farm near here began Thursday and was being continued Friday. Although federal men are still working at the plant and have taken finger prints and searched for clues, no new developments have been an- nounced and no further arrests made. Frank Bronk, tenant on the farm, was arrested following the raid. The still, which provided 1,000 gal- Jons of alcohol a day, is expected to keep dry agents here for some time. Hundreds of persons were attracted to the farm Friday to witness the men take down boilers, taxe apart refrac- tors and empty the huge tanks.
