“a een = UNIT OF NATIONA Seer fe Members of Company A Enter- tain Fathers At Program Thursday Evening Members of Company A, Bismarck national guard unit, entertained their fathers at a 10th anniversary cele- bration Thursday night at the World ‘War Memorial Building. The com- pany, which returned from the World ‘War by ones and twos in 1919, was re- organized March 2, 1922, although its history goes back to 1883, when it was organized as the “Governor's Guards.” Men of thé company and their fathers sat down to a dinner, which was prepared and served by members of the organization in army style, and speeches followed the meal. Lieut. Gilbert Cass was toastmaster and speakers included Adjutant General G. A. Fraser, Col. C. F. Mudgett, Col. L. R. Baird, Major A. C. Young, Ma- jor Frank Anders, Capt. E. G. Wan- ‘4 ner, Capt. H. A, Brocopp, H. C. Mc- Cready and Senator Lynn Sperry. H. J. Taylor and C. W. McDonnell, whose ‘ sons are members of the company, ‘ responded on behalf of the fathers. } Following its organization in 1883, 7 s 4 4 HM a 4 aa! the company record shows, the unit became a part of the First Dakota in- fantry and at the time of the Spanish American War it went to service as the First Dakota Volunteers. Later it served on the Mexican border be- 1 fore going to the World war. During that conflict the company was broken up and had men in most } of the divisions of the A. E. F., Bro- Hi copp said, in a brief talk. This con- tributed to the difficulty of reorgani- zation after the war and a lack of armory facilities also was a handicap but these were overcome in 1922 when the reorganization was effected. ‘The program was followed by a showing of films taken by the signal corps during the World war giving scenes at Chateau Thierry and other places on the French front. A reel of U. S. Navy films were shown as well as scenes from the U. S. infantry school at Fort Benning, Ga. Drys Gain Further, Digest Poll Shows ‘The drys again gain an increase over the wets from 19.28 per cent to 22.61 per cent of the total vote, in the third week's returns of The Literary Digest’s nation-wide prohibition poll, with 1,323,284 ballots tabulated, as an- nounced in Saturday’s magazine. ‘The drys polled 15.85 per cent in the first returns of this “straw” referen- dum. a ‘The addition of 500,000 more votes from 24 States in the current tally shows 299,207 ballots, 22.61 per cent for continuance of the 18th amend- ment and 1,024,077, or 77.39 per cent for repeal. The seven additional states report- Ing initial returns this week include: Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Massachu- tennessee. Kansas is the first state to report a dry majority, but Tennessee wav- xs between continuance and repeal with 48.68 per cent of its first tabu- ted ballots for prohibition.
