When the “father of light” was @ young man of 30 years, he | posed as the gunner for the Monmouth battle monument which still stands in Frechold. ‘The monument was cast more than.50 years ago by James Ed- ward Kelly, New York artist. It a is a memorial of the famous bat-. tle of June 28, 1778. Kelly sought for a model a young man with a smooth face. In those days young men were loath to shave their laboriously grown beards and moustaches and butnsides. Edison’ was “his man.” He called on the young inven- tor, who then was working in a laboratory in the lower east side of New York city. “You'll be just a model, Tom,” Kelly recalled telling Edison. “There will be no pay and your name will not appear.” Edison agreed provided he would not be disturbed from his work. Kelly sketched him while he labored at his laboratory bench. Dog Derby Is Set for Jan. 29 at Devils Lake Devils Lake, N. D., Jan. 14—(P)— It will be Dog Day in Devils Lake Jan. 29. WHAT, A ROOSTER? Naples.—Here is a.strange tale from Avellino about an odd rooster. The bird is a large specimen of the An- cona variety, almost black, with a huge. tail and military spurs. The odd thing about the rooster is that every day, as regular as a clock, it steals away to a nest and lays an egg. The egg is only half the size of an/} ordinary hen’s egg.
