OFFERS A PRESCRIPTION Editor, The Bismarck Tribune: In your editorials of Dec. 12 ap- pears an article headed “Corporation Farming’ outlined by the “Montana ‘Wheat King.” When this gentleman starts to advocate that the rich man should do the farming with skilled men and pay high wages, I feel like asking what we shall do with all the Poor men from whom all this skilled machinery is robbing their daily bread. The wrifer believes entirely in liberty. This liberty is nowhere as Perfect as in a family where husband . and wife work together, live on a farm by themselves and do diversified farming. By that, I mean all kinds of grain, wheat, corn, barley, oats and always enough potatoes and garden stuff. Do your farm work with horses. Have enough income from the cows that you milk to pay your running expenses and I am sure you will have @ little left to put away for old age from the sale of your other farm Products, Don’t ever think that when some new machine springs up you have to have it. Make your old machinery jast as long as possible. (I still use my first wagon that I bought when I started up farming in 1897. and my newest binder is 20 years old.) I raised 1100 bushels of corn this year and my corn: planter is a home made one. Cost me’$1.50. In my judgment, trac- tor farming is soil robbing. Observa- tion tells me so because those specu- lative farmers (I mean those who don’t live on the farm) most generally break up the sod, farm it a few years then let the land go back to weeds, yes, mostly Russian thistles that will ruin the diversified farmers. That is wrong. We should have more of our People live on the, farms where I see the most liberty. Yours very truly, parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Mac- Donald.
